Good combo?

Looking at a new rod n reel for my spinnerbait was thinking of getting a Daiwa Tatula CT with a Dobyns fury or a Lews speed spool  LFS with a Abu Garcia Veritas.Which do you think is better combo?

I use a Lews LFS Tournament MB with 7.5:1 retrieve and a Berkley Lightning Rod, 6-6, MH for spinnerbaits and similar single hook reaction baits. I can't say enough about how much I love this reel. I love it so much I own three. I also use it on my frog combo and my big trebles (lipless cranks) combo. It's a lot of reel for $130.

 

As for the rod, well it's a $40 rod. But it's durable (I've had it a decade) and casts well and sensitivity isn't an issue with this type of bait. I'll upgrade the rod one of these days.

Mine is a 6' MH Lightning with Procaster 100HN.  Use it for short range spinnerbaits.  1/2 oz. with Colorado blade shakes the whole rod.  Can't beat the combo for $47 plus $1.02 tax on the rod. 

 

OP, my personal preference...Daiwa/Fury.  However, I've never used a Fury or Veritas so I couldn't tell you which is the better rod.

Make sure and look up Brent ehlers video on how to set up a reel with magforce z brakes. It's a different dialing in process than normal baitcasters

I love the entire Tatula lineup and out of the 12 baitcasters I own 8. They include Tatula CTs, Tatula Type Rs and Tatulas (the original size Tatula before a CT existed). One is the predecessor to the Tatula, actually it was replaced by the Fuego CT,  it is called a Daiwa Exceler.

 

I just want to give you a heads up on the Diawa reels as this is your first one. These reels do not adjust the same as any other baitcasting reel period!! If you want to get max control and distance you need to follow the instructions in Brent Ehlers video ( the second video). The first video is done by someone else who explains how several different versions of Daiwa braking systems work. The last reel he talks about has Mag Force Z breaks and that is what Daiwa has standardized on in the Tatula and Fuego CT reels. The tatula SV TWS has basically the same system, but with a special spool and a different set of springs and cam parts.  Think of this reel as having a governor like a lawn mower does. The Mag Force breaking system works automatically, sorta like the governor on the mower. The break adjustment on the side allows you to fine tune it a bit more. Most times I adjust the spool tension in order to get just that small amount of side to side play (what Brent refers to as " the click) and I usually set my dial to "10" or mid point between min and max and leave it there. I rarely adjust it again, I do use my "educated thumb a bit but not that much.  Anyway here  are the two videos. I am a huge fan of Dobyns rods and Daiwa reels. 

Any Daiwa reel with Mag Force Z in it will adjust properly using this method. Good Luck and enjoy your new combo

Thanks for info and video just got back from using it and just watched the video great info thank you.Funny thing is I started the morning off with it set at 10 and adjusted brake system but I like that spool trick he showed great info.Dont know where to start it was an amazing day fishing the fish we're eating all morning approx( 40 fish)till about noon I started the day with dobyns rod and CT with a spinnerbait and it casted a mile smooth as silk no where near a backlash and wind was howling about 20mph loved the long distance of casting it ,the smoothness of it the handles very comfortable,strong drag system,light and very comfortable very high quality reel you can tell from the craftsmanship of it and performance now the rod OMG light, comfortable unbelievable sensitivity between the two it felt like I had no weight in.my hand.I switched it to.my worm rod cause the fish we're destroying the worms, the sensitivity was insane I was feeling every little thing I had a Gloomis years ago and I would put this rod in that category for half the price.I have like 5 other setups like bps pro qualifiers,Lews and there was huge difference in performance between them.Needsless to say I am going to  convert over to this combo just mind blowing performance at this price point thanks so much to the guys that endorsed this combo!!!

Whenever I answer one of these threads I always start by admitting that I am a huge fan of these rods and reels.

Having admitted that, the readers know where I am coming from. I sold several white Shimano Chronarchs E7s and some Shimano green Curados once I fished with the Daiwas.  I am not going to say that the Daiwa is the only great reel out there.  I have to say that they fits my fishing style and work extremely reliably.  I am glad you are happy with the combo.

I agree with you I am sure there are plenty of good rods and reels out there but this is a pretty sweet combo especially at this price point,well needless to say I know where what tax refund will be spent on ?

I was going to say it might be worth the extra money for the Tatula SV as throwing a 3/8oz spinnerbait is common and the SV is great with those lures under 1/2oz, but looks like I am too late. No worries though, the Tatula CT is still a fine reel, and it will actually cast further.

 

And I second what fishnkamp said about adjusting the Tatula. The second video is where I actually learned this from myself, and it really works. I usually run my brake at 6-8, and what I find is when you adjust the tension knob to the point it begins to click, that will work for any weight up to 3/4oz. Once it gets higher than 3/4oz, then sometimes I'll find myself tightening down on the tension knob, but the rest of the time I'm good. It's really nice knowing my reel is adjusted properly before I make my first cast.
