edfitzvb Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Movies: 1. Unforgiven a true triumph, and loaded with talented actors 2. Big Jake (close second) 3. The Outlaw Josie Wales (no slow moments) 4. True Grit (liked both versions equally well) Television: Maverick a completely different and unique western series Wagon Train and Rawhide both played well when I was young, not so much when I see them today 1 Quote
ThatredneckguyJamie Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Man you guys have mentioned some great ones! I might have to see if the kids will let me use Netflix long enough to watch some of these again lol 1 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 7, 2018 Author Super User Posted February 7, 2018 I don't think the Good, the Bad , and the Ugly was mentioned yet. The dialogue is great but it had too many slow spots . Still, a great. Favorite line is when Tuco is trying to read the addressed note to "idiot " Clint grabs it , takes a look , and says " Idiot " Its for you." And the famous music starts... Quote
RPreeb Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 One of my favorites, one which for some reason is rarely shown on TV, is The Cheyenne Social Club with James Stewart and Henry Fonda. The interaction between those two old fashioned cowboys cracks me up every time. Also loved Josie Wales... Chief Dan George was a hoot. Most by Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a good story too. Cat Ballou - Lee Marvin and his horse put on an Oscar winning performance. Quote
Burtonxj Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 My favorites are Tombstone, True Grit, and 3:10 to Yuma. 1 Quote
38 Super Fan Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 The Searchers and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are a cut above the rest for me. True film masterpieces. Quote
long island basser Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 A lot of good movies already mentioned. one that hasn’t been talked about or was hyped much back in 2003 starring Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner called- Open Range- is worth checking out. 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 10, 2018 Author Super User Posted February 10, 2018 Mountainman83 Your name reminded me of Jeremiah Johnson , which is another of my favorites. My wife and me watched Once upon a time in the West and didn't like it at all. About half way through I attempted to bail out and quit, ( I never bail on westerns ) but my wife said that , since we already saw half of it , we might as well finish it. It had several heavyweight western actors but had really nothing to offer but endless dialogue and little to no action. No offence if it's one of your favorites , it even had high reviews . The things that appeal to me in a western are : Good people fighting against evil , authentic, realistic , and believable characters, Lots of action, with good dialogue , and beautiful scenery. I just didn't see any of that in that movie. Now, the Outlaw Josey Wales- whole different story. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 10, 2018 Author Super User Posted February 10, 2018 What's the movie with Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall. It's Robert Duvals' gang against some Mexicans. Clint Eastwood rides with them but turns to the Mexicans side. It's the one where he hits the guy with the shovel who thought he was so tuff. The Sackett TV Movies were all good too, with Tom selleck. 1 Quote

Super User Senko lover Posted February 11, 2018 Super User Posted February 11, 2018 I love a lot of old Westerns, but if you can count the more recent "No Country for Old Men" as a western it's one of the better movies you'll ever see. 1 Quote

Yeah, Tommie Lee Jones is one of my fav. Actors. That movie held my interest for sure. Kind of reminded me of terminator. No matter where that cowboy went with the money, he was tracked down. One of my fav. Westerns with TL Jones was the Good old boys , with Sissy spacek. Its about the fading cowboy lifestyle at the early 1900s. 1 Quote
Subaqua Adinterim Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 I love the classics. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is one of the best. Also, if you're into real old classics; The Ox Bow Incident is another one to check out. I know these have real sparse settings and no special effects, however, the stories and acting are fantastic and these are unforgettable movies. Also, just remembered Little Big Man which is comparatively newer than the other 2 mentioned, was a good one as well that had some parts that were quite funny. 2 Quote
