Good day to all,

I have done some internal reading but cannot seem to find a good answer so here is my question(s);

  • who makes a high quality jig head with an oversized (not sure of exact size) stout hook (doesn't bend easily) in the 1/16 to 1/8 oz.?
  • do they also make football jigs for larger 1/4 -1/2oz. hair jig styles.

Sorry if this has been asked numerous times and i just can't seem to find it.

Thank you.

Have you used a 1/16oz marabou jig before? I ask because I tie a lot of them as well as pour them, and when it comes to that size I've never heard anyone ask for anything other than a light wire hook. The main reason is it is a light line technique that is normally 6lb fluorocarbon or 15lb braid with a 10' to 15' fluorocarbon leader in 6lb line, stout hooks with be a tough set at distance with light line and a medium light power rod.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes i have tied a few and do use them.

I guess "stout" was probably the wrong choice of word but i am trying to find a good quality painted jig hook with a slightly larger hook than what i believe is 1/0. I understand that most are a light wire hook but i was hoping to find something a bit stronger. Maybe a jig with an Owner or Gamakatsu hook would solve my problem. The hook in the jigs i have are terrible.

I went fishing at Lake Guntersville with Kevin Hawk, a former Bassmaster Elite angler, and he has a signature line of football jigs made by 4x4 bass jigs, they use a 4/0 hook in them in a 1/2 oz, I would say they are "stout". As for a bare jig head. . . I am not going to be any help. If you google search Kevin Hawk jigs you should find them. I really like the Defensive Craw and Guntersville Magic colors.

I read closer into the rules, and since I took them off of a website, the rules say I should have tagged the website. So I did.

He is looking for a 1/6oz to 1/8oz jig head for a marabou jig, completely different. What you posted is easy to find, what he needs is tough because he wants a hook larger than a 1/0 but heavier wire in a very light weight. What makes that hard is there is only a little bit of lead in a large hook so the head tends to come loose from the hook even with hard lead. That said, I do make a 1/16oz ball head with a 2/0 Owner 5313 hook, it can also be made in a 1/8oz if that would be any help.

Look at Owner standup heads, Gamakatsu football heads and site sponsor sells plain jigs.

My favorite jig hook is the Owner Deep Throat. It's a relatively light wire, but very strong, and the point is super super sharp! I use them to tie small jigs too. A size 2 may suit your needs for those 1/8-1/16oz jig. These hooks can take a pretty good beating getting snagged while keeping their hook point!

I realize I'm unorthodox, but I tie a bucktail/bunny/marabou jig on a Brewer spider head.  I use the 2/0 bronze hook, but they also offer a "pro" series with a stouter wire hook.

Thank you for your reply.

@IgotWood Are you purchasing your jig hooks without weight?

@OkobojiEagle That Spider Head is an interesting alternative. Thanks for sharing.

I purchase without weight. I actually add tungsten beads and/or tungsten cones to add weight. Google "belly scratcher minnow" and watch the tutorial. This technique allows the jig to fall level, rather than head first. I prefer this when fishing under a float. However, there are plenty of guys out there who would be happy to pour jigs for you with these hooks if that's what you prefer.  I'll post a pic shortly.

I use the small #1 5304 and I have to get them direct from Owner. I asked if they made a #2 and I was told the smallest is the #1 in the 5304, so where are you getting a size #2, I'm interested because I'd like to try those myself.

Yup, looks like a 1 is the smallest available. I thought they came smaller. My mistake. If you do need smaller hooks, check out some fly tying jig hooks. Gamakatsu, Partridge, and Fire Hole all make very good jig hooks.

I'm sorry, man. I tried to post a pic the other day but I was having trouble resizing it. And now I am prepping to move this weekend and all my stuff is packed in a box. I should be able to dig my stuff out by monday.
