Dobyns Fury Vs St. Croix Mojo Bass

I want a versatile rod. I want one for almost everything, not everything though, I know that a rod covering everything wouldn’t work well. Most lures I’ll throw will be around 1/4-3/4 ish What’s the most versatile out of these lineups?

Dude this is a pretty vague request.   If you are just looking for a good workhorse,  I'd recommend anything medium heavy and moderate fast around 7' to 7'4". I'd say go with a rod designed for Spinner baits, and it will be able to do pretty good at most things.   

 

Personally I like St Croix, but the Fury gets a lot of great reviews.  Never could find a Mojo Bass rod that had the lure rating/power/action I wanted so I got a 7'4" Bass X in medium heavy, moderate fast, and it can do an awful lot.  Maybe my most used rod.

For the Fury the model best suited is the 734C.

Love it.  It's in that perfect spot that has enough give to work well with treble hook lures but enough power to set a 4/0 jig hook.  If I could only take one rod for the day, that would be the rod.

 

Where the rod really shines is with moving lures like spinner baits and chatter baits but like I said, it is able to branch out in either direction quite well.

 

I've thrown bigger crankbaits that weight 1.5 oz and it handled them just fine.  On the lower end, it will cast 3/8 oz jig great, but a KVD 1.5 seems to be it's lower limit (which also weighs 3/8 oz) oddly enough.  I wouldn't expect to hit the moon with lures below 3/8 oz.

Mojo 7 mhmf will be your best option for an all around do it all rod.

The Mojo isn't a bad rod but the Fury is exceptional at the price point IMO. I have 3 and I'll be adding another 2 before Spring. First time I've ever bought multiple rods from the same line. That's how impressed I was with them.

Fury 704c. Very versatile for most application's except finesse lures.

The 705CB crankbait rod and the two swimbait rods - 795 and 806. Gonna be adding a 735 for frogging/pitching heavy cover and maybe a 702 spinning rod as well. Best do-it-all rod in the line would be the 734.

Are they sensitive? Is there anything you really like about them or something that stands out against St. Croix?

 

 

I want to fish jigs, plastics, crankbaits, light flipping and pitching, frogs(not much slop around here), spinnerbaits, small swimbaits and topwaters. I know some rods will work better than others but I want a rod that will do decent all the way around not just a specific area.

i do not have any experience with Dobyns  rods but i do with Mojo bass i have 4 off them they are the newer versions . I bought my first one a Target cranker s glass for square bills and it is such a pleasure to fish. i also have there slop and frog heavy action the jerkbait rod and a wacky rig rod and i am very pleased with all of them.  I will have to try a Dobyn's and see how it compares i guess.

They're very light and sensitive for a rod around $100. A lot of people say they're the best rods under $150. Some say the best under $200. I don't know about that, but I've been very impressed with them and at this point would not buy any other rod under $150. The reel seat and cork are super comfortable. The balance is great. Dobyns has technique specific actions dialed. And they have the best warranty and customer service you could ask for. 

 

There are a ton of reviews for the Fury on Tackle Warehouse if you haven't looked on there yet.

The majority of my rods were bought with versatility in mind.  They have a Fast action.  It wasn't until I bought a couple Tatula casting rods with Regular actions that I started to consider any other action being as versatile.  I really like these Tatulas.

 

Tyler, I am sure you already know both those models get a lot of praise.  I got my Mojo after our longer than usual Indian Summer was over.  Been out once with it so I can't really give an opinion of it other than to say I like it so far.  As already stated, some feel the Fury is the best rod in its price range.  I've not used one, but will most likely have one by this coming season.  I would add the Daiwa Tatula to your list.  I feel they are very good rods at full MSRP, but you can find them for $110 or less.  Jet has the 6'10" MHF for $93.28 with free shipping.  A steal.  Or if you want longer, the 7'2" MHR is another possibility.  Ebay has it for $96.06 with free shipping.  Another steal.

Good point.  I have a Tatula 7'2" Heavy for jigs and really enjoy it so far.  I also bought a 7'2" Med heavy with 'Regular' action, but haven't fished it yet so didn't want to speak for it.

 

In all honesty, the 7'2" Regular feels like the Fast side of a Moderate- Fast action rod in my hands and could be considered fast without reservation.  I was really hesitant to buy it because I already have plenty of moderate action rods.  A moderate action, it is not.  I expect it to be very versatile, and even excel at throwing jigs up to 1/2 oz with no problem.  Keep in mind this is a rod that can be had for around 100 bucks online if you look, but would still be a great buy at full price.

Not a fan of EVA foam, it’ll last forever but I’d rather have the sensitivity and comfort of cork. I’ll have to get my hands on it though, I did pick up a Falcon with micro guides at Walmart and it was really light and comfortable.

I wasn't a fan of EVA until the I got a Tatula.  I already expected to hate it.  After using it for a fair number of fishing adventures now, I actually like it quite a bit.  Not all EVA uys equal.   The foam on the Tatula has a nice,  dense,  quality feel to it.  After saying all that,  I'd still prefer cork or Winn grips,  but only slightly.
