fluna Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 I fish from a sit in yak and cant stand. I throw wacky worm, buzz baits, top water poppers and floating Rapalas. I use spinning gear. Does anyone use baitcasting gear from a yak? How about pitching and flipping jigs from a sitting position. Watched some you tube videos that guy makes it looks easy. 1 Quote
crankbait2009 Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 I do use a baitcaster from time to time. But mainly when I can do long casts. Anything short casted......forget about it. Quote

Its more of a hybrid pitch-cast, so its less controlled, less accurate, and makes a bigger splash. My old Tarpon 120's seat was literally level with water, made it a pain. Quote

Its basically the same cast pros do when they are fishing fast to maximize the time the lure is in the water. Watch this video from 5:30 on and see how he does it. He doesn't hold onto the bait, just pitches it. And don't worry about getting a lot of distance. You are in a kayak, easier to sneak up on them with. Quote
DSTN Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 I use baitcasters and spinning in my kayak. Walk the dog topwaters are the main baits I struggle with in my kayak but not too hot with them from the bank either so might just be operator error. Pitching can be a little tough at times from the seated position but I'm getting better at it. Just gotta keep firing away! Quote

This is the first video I've seen which really made clear the difference between flipping and pitching. Most seem to feel that the viewer has a basic understanding of the two techniques. This guy (looked it up... he's Mark Hicks) does a very good job of demonstrating the differences. He also could be the twin of my sister's husband, who is an avid fisherman. 1 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 They only lure that is a problem for me is a spook. Frogs and buzzbaits I have no problem with. But once you start to walk a spook, especially with a rod longer than 7ft, it makes the yak spin and you have to stop the retrieve, adjust your position and start again. 8 hours ago, fluna said: Does anyone use baitcasting gear from a yak? Yes. I don't know how I ever used topwater baits before baitcasters. Quote
Fish the Mitt Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I have a fishing kayak that is sitting only, and pitching a jig took practice. Other than that, spooks are difficult from time to time depending on conditions and wind. For everything else, practice your roll cast. Quote
