Midwest Outdoorsman Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Found this really old Diawa Procaster PMF-1000 (2 ball bearings). It is a beautiful reel seemingly made of quality materials. Not quite sure how old it is but I am pretty sure it is older than me. Wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this reel. If it is worth anything. What I should do with it. Etc. 1 Quote

The Bassman Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Reel is from the early 80's. Represented the early transition to today's low profile reels. They were very popular along with Shimano's Bantams at the time. Actually very able casters albeit slow by today's retrieve ratios. They looked great on short pistol grip rods. Quote
Super User burrows Posted February 1, 2018 Super User Posted February 1, 2018 It's in good shape for an old reel! Nice peice. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 1, 2018 Super User Posted February 1, 2018 Lew Childre owned a patent on the low profile reel that didn't expire until the mid 80's, Daiwa didn't have license rights to the patent, Shimano and Ryobi did. Ryobi AD4000V pre dates the Daiwa, is 7 oz with V spool. The Ryobi bait casting reels were light weight state of the art and forgotten today. Mid 80's isn't really old.... Tom Quote
Super User burrows Posted February 1, 2018 Super User Posted February 1, 2018 Mid 80s is old in the fishing industry. 2012 is old in the fishing industry. Things move quickly or have been as far as technology in just the last couple of years. Quote

Hmmm, Shimano Calcutta hasn't changes since the late 80's-early 90's, Daiwa's TD reels of the early 90's incorporate everything today's reel have today. The last thermoploymer was developed in the early 90's. So exactly what has been developed recently in reels? Tom 1 Quote

What is new with reel technology is the use of state of the art expensive components that raise the price but improves performance. ABEC-5+ bearings are not new, just new to reels. High speed gear ratios were very limited, the Shimano green Curado had 7:1 availble. Spinning reels were rarely used by bass anglers 25 years ago, today they very common. Rods have developed faster than reels, both are getting lighter weight. So you are not wrong. Tom 1 Quote

Midwest Outdoorsman Posted February 6, 2018 Author Posted February 6, 2018 If I were to sell this what could I sell it for? Quote
Big-Bass Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Maybe $30. If it were a PMA33 or a PT10/15ZX, or even a PTA33/PT33, you could get more. This was a middle/low end baitcaster of the day for Daiwa...and one without the Autoclutch thumb bar. Quote
Super User burrows Posted February 6, 2018 Super User Posted February 6, 2018 I was thinking 40? It’s in really good condition a big Diawa fan would like it as a display piece. Quote
