The Fishin' Hole TV series

I was involved in a discussion with a friend this morning about Jerry McKinnis' great fishing show, the Fishin' Hole.  I LOVED watching that show as a teenager growing up and swore that I'd eventually get to some of the places where Jerry was fishing (I distinctly remember episodes from Flaming Gorge Reservoir and the boundary waters, among others).  I've seen a few of the episodes or portions of them on YouTube, but does anyone know anywhere else to find them or to purchase them?  Man, I loved that show and would love to see them again.

I don't know how techy you are, but you might be able to find streams on kodi. 

 

If you don't know what kodi is, google it. There's a bit of a learning curve but lots of content.

Thanks Luke.  No, not me, not a techy at all, but I'll check it out.  For what it's worth, I did send an email to ESPN asking if they sell the old episodes and I got a canned response that they never make old programs available to the public.  Nice.

 

I Googled and found kodi, but it appears that you need to download the software before really searching for programming.  Maybe I'll inquire with one of my sons to see if they feel it's worth downloading or having for future viewing.

Nope, no luck on Amazon or Ebay.  I think this program was ended before you began seeing boxed sets of DVDs available, and as pointed out, ESPN (which aired the show), won't sell or release the archives.  It's too bad because it was a GREAT show and I'd gladly watch those old episodes over anything that's on TV today.

Never heard of being able to purchase old episodes, and there are a bunch. However, Jerry did give out a DVD of the final episode with his book he released a couple years ago.

Yeah, it played for 27 years, so even if there were only 8 or 10 episodes a year, that's a bunch of them.  Geez, I'd really like to find a library of the old shows.  I've watched a couple of them this morning and it's been a joy.  Jerry McKinnis was knowledgeable and he was also just a really likeable sort of guy, not to mention that he enjoyed light tackle fishing and most of the species and places that are also attractive to me.

Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a must in Utah!  I lived a couple hours away for half of my life!  it is unreal! Truly breathtaking!

I got to meet him years ago on the Delaware River. Great guy. He had his dog with him, can't remember that dogs name though. I could be wrong but I thought it was like a persons name.He signed a few things for me. I use to love the show. I have a Fishing Hole jacket. Probably vintage now.

I used to love his show. It was one of the many fishing shows that would be on starting at 5:30 on Saturday morning and run all day. A very different show from what you see today. Very laid back and relaxed, it didn't feel like an infomercial for the products he was using. A fellow that I'm friends with today, had appeared on his show many years ago.

If memory serves me it was called the Falls City Fishing Show in its' early years.  I used to enjoy the end of each episode as he referred to his dad who "always had time to take me fishing".

Been away for a week and just saw the responses.  I'm with you guys.  Just loved the show as a teenager.  It was almost better than Christmas morning to wake up on Saturday and watch Jerry fishing somewhere new, typically with light tackle for species that we all like to catch.  His episode on Flaming Gorge may have been my all-time favorite episode of any TV show ever.  Since that time, I've fished in a lot of different waters and I've caught a few zillion fish, but as a teenager, the thought that I might some day get to fish those areas and catch those numbers of fish was unimaginable. He was also just a really laid back gentleman, not to mention his love for sports (I even put up with "the coach" on his show.  In fact, the coach was also good entertainment).  

 

And now that you mention it, I remember his dog too.  It was a little Jack Russell, right?  Can't remember his name (right on the tip of my tongue), but you're right, it was a man's name.

Thanks for this topic.  Somehow I missed this show when it was on, and I'm regretting that.  I have to wonder why ESPN would be so averse to either showing the show in reruns or syndication.  Seems like it would be a winner, and certainly as entertainment, it's not time sensitive.  I just ordered the book.

I can't even begin to imagine why they wouldn't run it in syndication.  I'm clearly not the average fishing show viewer because I don't watch too many of them, but I suspect a whole new generation of anglers would love to see the old Fishin' Show episodes.  I feel badly for you Short Fish if you never saw them.  There are some episodes up on YouTube and you can get an idea what they were like, but I can't find my favorites.

I used to watch his show all the time when I was a kid, seems like a great guy.

When his book came out a few years ago, my wife wanted to get one for me for Father’s Day. We’re in Canada so it was all but impossible to order it online here so she called the given number and talked directly to one of his assistants and low and behold, right before Father’s Day the book showed up in the mail and was autographed to me with a personal note saying happy Father’s Day in his writing. Defenitely something I’m going to keep for a long time.

It was Gadabout Gaddis with his flying float air plane on Sunday nights and Jerry McKinnis on Saturday mornings. He actually build his own boat one per year. He promoted and started bassmasters I believe. He is in the bass fishing hall of fame because he did so much for the sport.

 

i wish espn would show fishing shows in the evenings or have a whole day of fishing shows. They have them on Saturday mornings and we’re are we on Saturday mornings. I have recorded Bill Dances shows but I wish I’d a done that with Jerry K too.

And those early morning shows are worse the farther west you live.  A 6 AM show for you is 4 AM for me.

Right.  I think that Ranger boats may have been a sponsor because if I'm not mistaken, weren't they made in Flippin Arkansas where Jerry lived?  I also noticed that he tended to use Eagle Claw rods a lot (or some other yellow, glass rods), but he used the baits that he wanted and he wasn't always trying to sell something.
