ghost Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 One of my favorite models, the Symetre spinning reel is not in the line up in the Shimano catalog. Such a great reel line. I have a 2500, 750 and 500. I used to have a 1500, but sold that a few years ago. I wish I didn't sell that reel. That reel was the Curado of the spinning reel class. And I really liked the all green color to them. I hope Shimano brings back the Symetre. If any of you guys have a Symetre 1500, or Sahara 1500 with spare spool, IM me if you want to sell. 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 its gone. the Nasci replaced it. but don't worry, the nasci are supposed to be awesome for the money 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted January 29, 2018 Super User Posted January 29, 2018 It will be missed. Still one of my favorite reels. Mine is the metal reel with the lubrication port and it was less than $100 when I purchased it. 1 Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 30, 2018 Super User Posted January 30, 2018 The nasci is kinda chinky I had one when they first came out I wouldn't recommend it. Quote
Hulkster Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 is the next step up the Ultegra worth it? I know it has direct drive handle like the stradics which is nice Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 30, 2018 Super User Posted January 30, 2018 I have Sahara 750 with spare spool, don't know if I wanna sell this but have not used it for years. Quote

As far as the nasci gos I rather have the new Sahara. Quote
PatrickKnight Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 If a Stradic isn't in your budget do yourself a favor and get the Daiwa BG. I have fished just about every 50-150 dollar spinner out there and the BG is the best by a good margin (Ultegra is close but would still take a BG). A lot of people get turned off by the weight but in real world use I can hardly tell the difference between it and my Stradic FK. 2 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 30, 2018 Super User Posted January 30, 2018 That reel was killed due to very well known issue with them locking up and the factory had no fix. Not all of them had a problem, so don't kill me, but enough that it was a well known issue and ended its run. My wife owns one and I pray it does not start doing it. If I had done some simple research before I got it for her I would have gone a different way. That is on her Irtod Genesis II jig rod. For her Dobyns frog rod I chose a Pflueger Supreme. That is a nice reel. You might want to look at one of those or go look at one of the Daiwa spinning reels. 2 Quote

BG is a good real but for bass fishing I think the new fuego lt is a better option as far as going with diawa and staying in the 100 range. I was also talking about the Ci4 not the fk however I've heard the fk has gone down significantly in price you can probably find one in the 150 range but I don't have any experience with the fk so I can't say much about it, as far as a new ci4 well I think that's as smooth as you can get for 200 this is just my personal preference. I have symetre the gen before they stop production but so far no problem(cross my finger). 2 Quote

Cost a couple of bucks for the replacement ring and you're good to go. Shimano must have gotten deluged with service complaints because of this design issue. They also went up in price considerable for all models. Very disappointing. Switched to Pflueger myself. Better reel in my opinion. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 1, 2020 Super User Posted November 1, 2020 I’m not sure how many Symmetrys I have but it is around 10 sizes 1000, 2000, and 2500. They date back to around 20 years. I haven’t had the lock up problems that I have read about. I also have Sedonas, Saharas, and Stradics but Symmetrys are my go to. I’m glad I have several. 1 Quote
Alex from GA Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 I bought a couple of 2000FHs a few years ago @ a garage sale for $15, not each. Cleaned and lubed them and have been using them ever since. They have much the same parts as a Stradic. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 1, 2020 Super User Posted November 1, 2020 I have one as well. I have never had an issue with it. It has been a workhorse. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted November 2, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 2, 2020 I have one that a buddy gave me when it locked up. I set it aside for a few months and it started working again (this happens with a lot of my spinning reels magically). It has worked fairly well for a decade since then 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted November 2, 2020 Super User Posted November 2, 2020 I have a 2500 that is still in my rotation. Never had a problem with it. Truth be told I have never accidentally dunked it so I don’t know if it would bind. I also have a 1500 but it is my Dad’s and I won’t part with it. 1 Quote
waymont Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 This is the first I’ve heard of Nasci reels not being great. The two I have are smoother reeling than my Ci4+. most reviews I see online are glowing too. I had three Symmetry reels, one of which started to bind up. They were solid reels otherwise. Quote
livin2fish Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 I've had two symetre's for years. One had the lockup problem, the other did not. The one that locked up mostly happened during the heat of summer. Started during second year of use. Sent it to a Shimano repair shop and they said they removed the friction ring. Both reels now over 10 years and are still used regularly. Quote
Hulkster Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 i saw the symetre is back this year as part of a symetre combo: https://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/FISHING_COMBOS/SIENNA_COMBO1.html no idea how good it is, or if it is available separately or not. or if the friction ring is not part of the design (the older stradics also bound up apparently cause of the same issue, i had many but never had the binding problem - I guess if the friction ring didn't get wet or break down you were fine). it was the worst in the early 2000s - people called them Shimbindo's Quote

Looks like Shimano went cheapo. Quote
