Huge let down

We had a heatwave in Detroit last week, it reached 50 on Friday. I work Sunday-Thursday, so it seemed the stars were aligned. 

 

Like many of you, I’ve collected some new gear over the winter and have been pacing around the house waiting to try it all as it sits there taunting me. Most notably I’ve picked up my first “higher end” rod, and a very nice reel that I’ve been frothing at the mouth to try out.

 

I didn’t have time during the week to go and scout any of my usual spots. My thought process was that it wasn’t warm enough for long enough to melt the ice, but that the river should have had enough current in some spots to keep the ice away. So I packed up my gear, decided on a few spots that I thought might be ice free, and peeled off. 

 

Fellas, I was heartbroken. Not a single spot  could be had. One looked promising, but with the current, it was pushing 25x25 slabs of ice right past the shore. Even if I had a bite, the odds of getting broken off by an iceberg made it a losing bet. 

 

My hopes were so high, but Mother Nature crushes them violently.

I feel tor ya,I had just the opposite happen here in Genesee county. Took a walk yesterday at one of our fine county parks and much to my surprise soft water at two of my spots. Had I known I would have fished on Saturday. It was tempting to go home and pick up some gear. Now I wake up to snow on the ground this morning, mother nature is driving me crazy!!

This has been one of the few winters where the mighty Potomac pretty much froze up.  Lots of open water now but water temps are very low.  Lucky for me I have access to the discharge side of a nuke power plant.  Water was 58-65 Saturday and the big girls were eating.  Sorry to rub it in.

So you found the 2-3lb big girls instead of the usual 0-1lb boys and girls?

That's how I feel here in Indiana all to often... A limit of squeakers will get you in the top 5-15% in most tournaments here lol

You know that side well.    Funny thing is, the old timers talk about a time when 6lbers were common over there.  Best I've ever done was an 8 in the dead of summer in the back of a creek in pool 3.

It was ALWAYS better back in the day! Well you know about the one I found over there once upon a time , guess there are a couple in there

It was 52 here on Thursday, 55 on Friday, and 55 on Saturday. There was still ice on the pond Saturday afternoon. Not much ice, but you had to watch where you were casting.

Back down to the low 30’s/20’s for at least the next 2 weeks. Pretty sure it’s never gonna warm up

It warmed up here for a bit, but it was because of the torrential downpours. This is the James River near Belle Isle in downtown Richmond just west of the I-95 bridge. It's a little over 3 feet above flood stage.

If ya just want open water, I'm sure there's a parking lot you could hit.  ;  )

I’m going hunt down open water tomorrow. Don’t care if it takes me all day to find it, don’t care if I even catch anything.
