Almost all my reels are TD Advantage 153HSTA.  Honestly, there is nothing wrong with them. They are a more than capable reel. Nonetheless, I can't stop looking at the new Tatula SV TW. I have one T3 Ballistic that sold me on the TWS. I loved that reel but it's had the infamous grinding on retrieve for a couple seasons now. But that was one of the first TW reels and I know Daiwa has refined the system over the years. The HSTA is about as solid a reel as you could get, just a little on the larger side. Anyone happen to have experience with both the HSTA and Tatula SV yet? T-Tour gave the HSTA the highest score I think I've ever seen them give a reel (9.0). But that was 10 years ago. I looked at the original Tatula when it came out but it's the addition of the SV spool and the smaller frame that has me going now. Do you think it's a good time for a change or should I stick with what I know? Thanks for helping me think this through.

I’d send the T3 Ballistic to DVS for service.  As to switching out your good reels for Tatula Sv TWS, it’s player’s choice.  I really like my Sv TWS but I have older Shimano and Ambassadeur reels that have proved to be super reliable.  My Sv TWS is a pleasure to use and a cut above but not so superior that my bass fishing is going to take a quantum leap just because I got one of the latest, greatest.

Love my sv tws. If I could have all of those in my line up I would. I own tatula cts and fuego cts as well. All daiwa here.

The HSTA is a tank of a reel. Reliable, well built, awesome performance, but heavy compared to todays reels. Time will tell of the Tatulas and Zillions will hold up like the Advantages, TDXs & Zs, and Zillions.

Keep it tuned up but take a chance on the Tatula CT & CT SV or Fuego Ct. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I have kept my two htsl both still work great and something to have as reliable backups.  My son is now 9 and they will be his reels soon as he can keep his paws off my sv103 and steez reels.  If there still working correctly no reason to change imo.

I know the Bait Monkey quite well.  He is one persuasive dude.  Your reels must be approaching a decade or more in age.  I can see why a new reel...or two...would pique your interest even though the old ones work fine.  I think you should consider a couple new rods to go with those new Tat SVs.  I am sure there must be a braid you haven't tried yet.  Now would be a good time to try it.   Have you tried Sunline Shooter Defier Nylon Monofilament or Fluorocarbon yet?  Megabass makes some pretty lures.  A few of them would sure look nice with those new rods and reels.  This new gear would look crappy on your old boat.  I'd start looking for a new one now while prices are down.  I'd also take a good look at your wife while you are at it.

Glad to be of help.

Thanks for the replies. They were helpful. Mostly :slywink:  I actually put off asking for weeks for fear of the flaming I thought I might receive. Like I started it off, I know that this is not really a "problem".  What I didn't hear though is: You're an idiot if you think you can do better.

And I don't think you will.  All kidding aside, the Tat SV is a sweet reel.  Reel size and weight doesn't seem to bother me, but I will admit that even I notice some reels fit my hand better than others.  (My wife says I am clueless.  I assume that is also true with my fishing.  :( )

Honestly.....if you haven't purchased a new reel since the 153HSTA, then I think you deserve to treat yourself to a new one.  JMHO.  I know in my case new gear is what keeps me going out.  Otherwise I'd quit....again...as fishing in my area is pretty bad.

DON'T DO IT! You'll just keep buying more. I started with 1 now I have 3. All kidding aside, when you decide to buy one, look on eBay. The last one I purchased was $118

The 8:1:1 was $118.95 last Tuesday.   Take your time and watch on eBay. All 3 8:1:1 tat sv's I bought were under $125

If you have good reels that work why go as low as a tat.  If there is not any rush why not get a reel that inspires you.  Just a thought.
