Ike Delay 6'4" Jerkbait Rod

I'm thinking about picking one of these up as my next addition to the arsenal. Obviously I want to use it for jerkbaits, but it seem like it would be perfect for smaller spook-type baits and poppers as well. I would also want to use it for cranking squarebills through/near structure. I know people generally prefer longer rods for crankbaits, but I think this rod would probably be better suited to it than the two rods I already own. I fish a lot from a kayak so the smaller overall length and grip are probably even more of a benefit in that context. Any thoughts, commentaries, alternative suggestions? Thanks.

I believe that action and rod type is commonly used for everything you described.  And I think many people prefer shorter rods for squarebills around cover for more accuracy.

 

The shorter butt will benefit the "jerk" portion when throwing the jerk bait.

 

I don't have experience with that specific rod but I do have two like it.

I bought a All Star split grip casting rod that is a M Fast 6'0" length for jerkbaits and top water walk the dog type baits used with a low stretch co-poly line  . Academy had it on sale for $49 (reg. $79) - they also have a jerkbait rod in a slightly longer 6"4" length ... I choose the shorter rod for making short , crisp jerks of the rod to keep the lure in the strike zone longer as a longer rod takes up too much line with each jerk - however there are times when a longer length jerkbait rod can be beneficial (for working a lure fast and covering water !)

I own many of the Ike series rods now and love them for the price .

the 6'4 delay would work well for you. i use mine for mostly close quarter squarebill fishing. It is a true moderate action and jelly like tip. 

I also have the 7'3 delay in a medium mod fast. I like this one even better for spooks and jerkbaits because you get into the backbone of the rod a little quicker. It will handle small cranks all the way to the large medium divers. If you get a chance, check that one out as well.

Well thanks for the help everyone, I walked into academy to check out some leads and walked out with the *** *** in 6'7". It's longer than I had wanted initially and in a fast action but it was too sweet to pass up. So I will see how it works for me as a jerk/spook/popper/squarebill rod. 

For some reason the brand and model of the rod I purchased have been replaced with asterisks?

I have several rods I use for jerkbaits, square bills, and poppers/small walking baits. I know you are looking for something that covers it all and it can be tough because square bills seem to do better with a little extra power. I know of a rod that will work great for what you want to use it for, I got 2 myself in the same length but different powers. I know you already picked a rod up but should you not like it for some reason I think you should check out the Hammer Rods 6'9" MH-MF, it is rated 3/16oz to 3/4oz and it is perfect for your needs. Yes, it is a MH but it is more like a light medium heavy, it will handle some of the smaller walking baits and poppers without overpowering them yet it will have a little more power to run a square bill through cover, and it is their regular rod, not the crankbait series.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm new to crankbait and jerkbait fishing and am still trying to figure out what I like. I come from a background of mostly using plastics and some finesse techniques. The rod I bought is the ***, by "***".

Seriously though, why are those words marked out?

Glen has a sticky note about that brand on this site.  There were some lets say "childish" members on here years ago. They were running the reputation of that company into the ground in posts here. Glenn (the owner of this business we call Bass Resources) was told by that company to either stop the issue or suffer great financial hardship and legal trouble. The poor behavior that some members chose to display here is the reason that there are things in place to censor that companies name from being displayed.  The shame of it all is that I have no idea of the quality of the products they produced back then, but they produce very competitive products today. All this means is that if they were aloud to be discussed by its loyal users the overall opinions would be rather good pr for them.  Those members were also quickly blocked from being here, so the issue ended right there.  I hope that explains it for you.

 

Frequently when there are issues it is caused by a few bad apples, but we all deal with the consequences.

I am glad you found a rod to suite you. If you decide you need another rod for this duty the Ike rod is my main jerkbait rod. i use it for wake baits and jerk baits mostly. It will handle baits like the pop r or small to mid sized poppers/topwaters. I have a heavier action rod for throwing baits like full size spooks.  Then again, I throw them on heavy mono for bass and stripers, not 12 pound test P Line floroclear like what I choose for my jerkbaits and wakebaits.

Thanks for filling me in, I figured it was something legal-ish. I may just have to check out the ike rod still. I'm still in the process of figuring out what I like in a jerkbait rod. I fish form a kayak alot, which absorbs some of the power from the jerking motion, as well as from the hookset, which changes the game a bit. Not to mention it makes it impossible to do a straight down twitch, so I have to jerk to the side. 

 

In respect to the 6'7" med/x-fast rod I bought, what would be a traditional use for something like that? It's basically a short finesse rod right?

Well first most yak guys like shorter rods.  So right off the back I think of it as if it were a 7' or 7'3 med/extra fast when fished standing on a boat.  Depending on its power & how light the tip is I bet you could throw baits like count down Rapalas, or floater divers like those baits. I am sure it will fish baits like Reaction Innovation Skinny Dippers with either belly weighted hooks or even 3/8 to 1/2 swim bait jigheads ( think of the jigs that look like a fish head).

I bet it would be fine for baits like shakey heads and smaller texas rigs.  A little experimentation is in order.  I would find a ton of things to do with that rod.  The benefit of a true medium power moderate action rod is found when you fish a treble hook bait like a jerkbait or top water popper, even a wake bait or small crankbait. The mod action rod allows you to keep those trebles pinned in the fishs mouth,

That 6ft 7 medium is a great stickbait rod.. I have one in the Muse blk. I wouldn't hesitate to throw a Yellow Magic or 1.5 squarebill on it..

 If you ever come across the old Falcon weightless worm rod grab it. One of the best stickbait rods ever.

 The McClelland signature rod in the Cara series is about the same rod.

Avid X 6'4" M Fast or Extra Fast not sure which one
