Troy85 Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 What would y'all recommend as far as knots for tying fluorocarbon leader to braid line? I'm horrible with knots, so trying to get some opinions on what I should use. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 25, 2018 Super User Posted January 25, 2018 Back to back uni works for me. 4 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted January 25, 2018 Super User Posted January 25, 2018 (edited) IMHO, the simplest/easiest is the double-uni, which I use 99% of the time. Next for me is the Alberto. Edited January 25, 2018 by Darren. Added Alberto image 2 1 Quote
Dtrombly Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 The Alberto is the easiest for me personally, 1rod1reel has a good tutorial on this knot on YouTube Quote
LionHeart Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 FG knot. Simple but a little time consuming to do well. Extremely thin and strong. Quote

I wouldn't call the FG simple... Simple implies the entire knot is easy to tie from start to finish. I'm pretty good at knots, and have 99.9% success with the double-uni in both fresh and salt, but I could not get the FG to cooperate whatsoever with thin diameter braid and line up to 15# test. No doubt some, like you, are adept at tying it, so kudos to you and your success. 3 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 26, 2018 Super User Posted January 26, 2018 The alberto is the only connection know i use. Its easy to tie even on the water, fast and strong. The only important part is to make sure its tight so the braid cuts into the leader material. Never had any burn issues with it either... Quote
Russ E Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 i made the decision to learn how to tie the fg knot this winter. It was a long road. I started out with large braid and flouocarbon, then worked my way down. after several failures I am now at the point that I can consistently tie 10 lb braid to 8 lb flourocarbon. the key for me was to have something to hold the mainline tag end. holding it in my mouth did not work well. I found this at Bass Pro. it attaches to your belt loop. we will see how it goes on the water. it is without a doubt the most streamlined and strongest knot I have ever tied. Goes through the rod guides nicely. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 26, 2018 Global Moderator Posted January 26, 2018 The back to back uni is what I started with and it worked well, but the Alberto is a smaller knot that clears guides better and is also easy to tie, so I've switched to that. 3 Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted January 26, 2018 Super User Posted January 26, 2018 Does anybody use the surgeon's for fluoro to braid? I love it for mono to braid because it's so easy. My near sight is getting bad and I can tie that in the dark. But you can't use it to join two long lines unless you want to feed the new line spool thru the knot. In that case, the double uni is my choice. Quote
drscholl14 Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 I was using the double uni last season but had it fail on a few hooksets. Whether it's my skills or the knot I don't know but I may have to try some of the others out after my frustrations with it last year. Quote
HookRz Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 I use short leaders that don't pass through the guides. I've started using this knot late last season and so far it's proven to be just as tough and simpler to tie than my trusty Alberto. The Lefty Kreh knot. Takes less than ten seconds. 1 Quote
Troy85 Posted January 26, 2018 Author Posted January 26, 2018 I'll give these a try when i get home from work and see which one works better.....this evening under my carport should be entertaining. If anyone buys popcorn and stops by, I'll have some chairs setup so you can watch the clown show that is me trying to learn new knots. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted January 26, 2018 Super User Posted January 26, 2018 For me it depends, it would be my knot tying skills but I found that the Uni-Knot wasn't always great for me with certain lines. For example a local brand of braid I use seems to always slip when using a double UNI. So I would always use the Alberto Knot and haven't slipped since! Both knots are great though, because the double uni had no issues with PP and Sufix braid for me. Quote
tander Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 Tried the FG knot but I just couldn't get it. I use the Alberto knot, easy to tie and works great. Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Alberto knot! The blood knot is too tricky for simple person like myself. Quote

No doubt some, like you, are adept at tying it, so kudos to you and your success. I agree 110%. Not only was I a Cub/Boy Scout as kid but my I was BSA leader thru my son getting Eagle. During this time I spent 7 years with a wilderness search & rescue group that was always used knots for simple things to verticle needs. Point is I am very comfortable with knots as I and others had to trust my knots. However, the FG I just can't seem to get down. I suppose if I spent the time I could but there are other knots out there that for an inshore fisherman work fine. Quote
CroakHunter Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I tie the fg. it's the first and only leader knot I learned, so I don't know anything different as far as difficulty. I practiced a lot and tested it myself for over 3 months before I took it on the water. Quote
