dmack Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 I am replacing my H Bird 859 (up front). I am considering going full bore with Helix 10 Mega Si unit. Not sure if installing a side imaging up front is the way to go. I already have one in back. I just wondered if I would regret it if I just go with down imaging. I'm sure turning the trolling motor will impact the image somewhat. Just would like to get some input from others in the know. Thanks. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 23, 2018 Super User Posted January 23, 2018 I know others will disagree with me but I have both down and side imaging on my bow unit and seldom use either feature. I fish almost nothing but natural lakes and there isn't much to see on the bottom except rocks and weeds and my 2D sonar shows those just fine. Maybe not in as much detail, but plenty good enough for me to tell what is what. 2D shows fish much better too. For side imaging, you have to be moving to make it work. I'm seldom moving fast enough while on the TM to take advantage. If side and down imaging showed fish a lot better, I know I'd probably use it more. Quote
Mjmj Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 I have Helix 9 mega side imaging on my bow. You DON'T have to be moving that fast to get great detail. I have gotten clear images at .3 mph. You learn to adapt to the direction of the TM. I have found Creek beds, small valleys , trees and the list goes on. You will love the mega imaging I hope this helps. Quote

I replaced an 898 at the bow of my boat with a helix 9 sonar gps in the case I might want to add 360 in the future I still can Quote
dmack Posted January 24, 2018 Author Posted January 24, 2018 It does help. I am down to deciding if that 1" diagonal inch is worth the extra $400. Quote
