All Purpose Custom Rod

Hello all,

 

I am potientally looking at a custom rod. I have around 400-450$ to spend. I would be looking at a casting rod that can fix as a all purpose rod so about a 7ft Medium Heavy power, Fast action rod. I thought about ALX or Kitsler but can’t decide.

Custom is a great way to go if you know exactly what you like.  Every detail can be made to fit your style of fishing.  I would never go back if i have the choice but its not for everyone.  Do you have a high quality jig rod?  I use mine for a lot of stuff but it should be your best IMO.  The blank is the most important piece of the rod and going low in this area cant be fixed.  For a first custom i would go with one of the big three, NFC, ST CROIX SCV, or Phoenix K2.  There a few other solid choices out there like Point blank but i dont hear as much feedback about them.  If you are uncertain about an aspect of your rod trust the experience of your builder to make a solid decision.  Build costs can be all over the map as well.  DVT being a sponsor might be a great place to start, and he has very reasonable rates.  OTTER rods are amazing but know that you will pay for the name as well as the skill.  Some factorys have custom shops and that is another choice, one that i have not used but would feel very comfortable with.  Good luck on your journey.

I’m not sure if the price point but another blank from rainshaddow that would be a great all purpose is the etec72mh. I have a rod built on that blank and I absolutely love it.

The St. Croix 5C70MHF makes a fanatastic rod and you shouldn't have any problem finding a factory rod to handle with your reel of choice on it. If you can go one lighter the medium blank in this series makes even better rods that are up there with the finest from anyone and just flat fun to fish with.

for me I would ask what you want from a custom that you cant get from a regular?

I build rods for myself and that is because I want something i can't really pick up in the stores.

 

When i started building I picked longer blanks then i could find locally  as well as winn grips or full handles with specific reel seats because most of the rods I liked in the stores for some reason like to use uncomfortable reel seats.

My one and only custom built rod(7.5 ft. two piece Lamiglas MH/F) had/has a very specific purpose; land locked salmon and lake trout used on a body of water that no boat of any kind is allowed on (drinking water supply). At the time I had the rod made there was literally no commercial equivalent available. (30+ years ago) Everything was "ultra light" and if you've ever had the opportunity to hunt monster lake trout you'll understand that "ultra light" wasn't going to get the job done, especially from the bank.

 

My point is, if you're not in need of something for a very specific job, and an all purpose, multi species rod will more than adequately do the job for now, perhaps it would be better to hold off on a custom rod until such time as you have a more specific need.

 

Far be it from me to tell anyone how to spend their money, but with so many excellent rods available OTS for "all around use" you may be happier in the long run to fine tune the pros and cons of what you really want/need in a custom rod.
