LoweStinger Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Hey guys, I want to hear any positive/Negative things on how you feel about your Ulterra trolling motor. I wasn't looking to spend all that $$$$ but the more I thought about it, the more I realized Its the best way to go given the disability I have with my back. It literally solves every issue I have now with my current setup ! I Would also like to hear any tips you have learned along the way you could pass on from installation to use. I think I will pull the trigger when BPS has their spring classic event and hope it qualifies on the triple crown bonus buck. It seems there isn't a place to get them any cheaper than the MSRP.. Thanks Guys ! Quote

Super User Scott F Posted January 22, 2018 Super User Posted January 22, 2018 There are places that sell them at less than MSRP but they are not allowed to advertise a discounted price. I bought my Terrova a couple of years ago from a place that used to be a sponsor here. I got it for a discount, got free shipping and didn't have to pay sales tax. You just have to call them to get their best price. Quote

OperationEagle Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 As for tips. It depends on link or non link. I have ave the link so it connects to the fish finder. It will I’ll follow a contour on the map. It it will go to any spot on the lake you tell it to. Just put the cursor on the map and hit the go to command I use the remote over the foot peddle exclusively. Pay ray attention to the boat scale options so the gps can spot lock your boat with the best control radius. I am sure there’s more but that’s a start. Quote

How do you hold a fishing rod in one hand, the reel handle in the other hand and operate the remote? Quote
ThatredneckguyJamie Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 I have the Terrova, the slightly overweight, not quite as pretty younger sister to the Ulterra..does most of the same stuff without the auto deploy and while I LOVE it...there has been times when I wish I would have dropped the extra coin and bought the Ulterra Quote

Yes it can be busy at times but w the remote putting everything at your fingertips it becomes intuitive. Late last year I did pull out the foot pedal to see how I liked it. I think this year I might try to use both to try to keep my hands more free. Quote
Super User Further North Posted January 24, 2018 Super User Posted January 24, 2018 I use both the remote and the foot pedal, depending on what I'm doing and where I am in the boat. Really enjoy my Ulterra after having a Terrova for 4 years. Both worked great, minus a couple of user caused issues. ...A friend is still running the Terrova, two years into my Ulterra conversion. Auto deploy/auto stow is OK...power trim is the cat's PJs. I have mine (with Link) networked to two Helix units, love the follow the contour feature, go to waypoint, follow a route... Re-spot lock. Point the bow into the wind when you engage it. You're gonna wind up that way anyway, it makes life a lot simpler. Quote

Hope my questions help the OP Is the Ulterra quieter when you turn it than the older model Terrova? Is the up/down trim quick enough vs manually tilting the Terrova if you have to miss rocks, etc in a river environment? Has anyone gone from 101 to 112 thrust and seen a difference in power to hold in current? Thanks Quote
LoweStinger Posted January 24, 2018 Author Posted January 24, 2018 I have a battery question to go along with getting the Ulterra 80 lb. I currently have a 12 volt system and will be converting it to 24 volt. Am I ok to keep with the group battery size 24 or should it be 27 ? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 24, 2018 Super User Posted January 24, 2018 Get the biggest batteries that will fit in your battery compartment. Size 24's will work but won't last as long as 27's or 31's. I'd use 31's but on my boat, my compartment will only hold 2- 27's. Quote

Neither has been enough to impact fishing. 17 hours ago, heavyduty said: Is the up/down trim quick enough vs manually tilting the Terrova if you have to miss rocks, etc in a river environment? Tough to answer as I don't know how you fish. You can do it with one hand, while still hanging on to the fishing rod, but if it's a rock that suddenly appears off the bow and I wasn't ready for it...not sure. Pulling the Terrova up involved setting down the rod, hitting the shaft lock lever with my foot, pulling the Terrova in with my hands...so while the action of actually pulling up the Terrova is faster, the entire process takes at least as long as grabbing the remote and pressing a couple buttons. 17 hours ago, heavyduty said: Has anyone gone from 101 to 112 thrust and seen a difference in power to hold in current? Made the change from 101 to 112 when I moved to the Ulterra. Yes there's a difference. 1 Quote
