JLBBass Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 looking to get a couple "under $150" crankbait rods. deciding between the St Croix Premier 70MHM, or the Dobyns Fury 705CB. I've owned the Avid 70MHM before, along with the Dobyns Champion 705CB (both graphite and glass). Liked them both. Just wondering if the power/action in these different models would be about the same as the "one step up" models (Champion vs Fury, Avid vs Premier). uses will be throwing shallow to mid depth cranks (4-10 ft) Quote
kschultz76 Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Powell just released a new Endurance series including crankbait specific line. They have several glass composite but also one all graphite model that’s a MH ModFast that looks interesting. I had a St Croix Legend Elite 7’2” MHM crankbait stick and I found that model a bit too mod/whippy and the handle was too short. I sold that one on. My father has a 6’6” Avid MHM and it’s not as whippy. That has lead me to other options for graphite crank rods, not sure how the Pemier handles, I’d guess close to the Avid. I really like Kistler KLX crankbait, rio, twitch series rods they have a mod fast action I like for cranks that aren’t as soft. I also like my Orochi XX Flatside Special and Spinnerbait Specials for cranks. I also have a Hammer Rods 7’3” MH all American micro rod that I’m trying out as a versatile rod for cranks too. It’s more of a mod fast action as most of their rods are I’m told. They’re inexpensive with great sensitivity for the price. But build quality is not top notch in my opinion, I noticed guide wrap epoxy work was way too heavy, sloppy, and inconsistent. That’s my only gripe about the rod. Quote
JLBBass Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 well,... I have a $100 Cabelas gift card that I paid $82 for lying around, and I just seen that Cabelas has a SPECIAL, "today only" going on. 10% off order plus free shipping. So I just grabbed a Fury 705CB to try. It actually only cost me the $82 I had in the gift card. If I like it, I'll go with another later. Quote
