68camaro Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 The "best" is subjective and at the highest end each has its particulars that will speak to you most or not. I'll take the ultra finesse option as I am looking for a second Finesse spinning rod and considering Daiwa NRX , Megabass Destroyer, Dobyns Extreme and maybe G. Loomis. However for a 1/32 oz Daiwa has the Presso Ultralight series and I don't know anyone else offering a 1/32 oz option. My current Megabass has a 1/16 rating. Megabass is replacing their Orochi series with new line and I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Dobyns is also coming out with a new high end line up, should be summer and it will be interesting to see as well. For a reel I have the Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500FA 6.0:1 and love it, no idea if its the best money can buy but its high end and I have 6lb mono on it but can easily go to 4lb. Quote
kroberts9 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 One word explains it all:PREFERENCE. My finesse spinning reels need smooth drag,quick line pick up and paddle handle. Baitcaster reels are a bit different due to techniques. Lower gear ratios(under 6:4:1) are best suited for deep crankbaits. Also lower gear ratios have more power or torque. Mid gear ratio (6:4:1-7:0:1) are most common and can be used for almost anything Burner gear ratio(7:0:1 and up) are best used in any technique where you need to pick up line quickly. Frogs and jigs quickly come to mind. Rods: Most of my rods are Daiwa. I own 7 of them. My second favorite would be Phenix I own 2 of them I have owned: st.croix, g Loomis, Abu Garcia, and other brands. I can say comfortably that I feel Daiwa makes some of the best rods out there and they cover all tapers and actions for every technique. Quote

Ill give it a go. 1) 7' MHF St. croix Legend = Elite w/ shimano aldeberan w/ 30lb Power pro 2) St. Croix Legend Tourney 6'9" MHMF with a Curado K and 30lb power pro 3) Swim baits are out of my realm... 4) St. Croix Avid x MHF 7' w/ a Curado K and 15lb flouro of your choice 5) St. Croix Avid MHM 7' with Abu Winch. 30lb power pro. (I like the sensitivity) 6) Shimano Poison Adrena 6'6" L w/ a Stradic CI4 1000 w/ 10lb power pro. (I fish stained water) You can see where my preferences lie lol Quote

I love that setup. Line of choice is 12# yhb or 15lb p-line 100%. 5) steez 7' flex lite rod medium moderate, daiwa alphas ito with 6.8 gears and zonda deep spool. 10# yhb or pine 100%. This setup goes down to a #5 shad rap but I don't like a full ounce on it. Rated 1/8 to 1. Quote

I'm using a Rainshadow Eternity blank ETEC72MH-SS, built by Mike at DVT. Wooden split grips or Cork depending on the price difference between the two of them. With either a Diawa Steez or a Met MGL(7.x.x or higher gear ratio). Super User fishnkamp Posted January 21, 2018 Super User Posted January 21, 2018 Well that is different. I deeply apologize, so often when a thread like this is opened it is to stir the pot. I guess if you had started with "I am having a couple of rods built ... I would not have gotten the wrong impression. I have a rod builder locally that loves to use the Rainshadow blanks. That should be awesome. I use two different rods for those two techniques, but that is my preference. Since you are unsure what you want to use, either cork or wood, I will complicate your decision making a little more. Have you ever had a rod in your hands with Winn Grips on it? I I had my friend Tom change a defective reel seat and grips on a 1 year old G Loomis rod. I messed around with some of his play toys in his work shop and chose a set of the "natural" grips. After I got to fish it I had him change another one of my G Loomis rods over to those grips. Now both of mine are on spinning rods, but I love those grips. If they get wet they get a little more grippy and they look pretty much like cork. That spinning rod should be awesome too. Good Luck let us know how they turn out. Mike takes good care of us here for sure. By the way I use a Powell Max ( an original not a Max 3D) 683CEF for my jig fishing most of the time. It is 6'8 MH XF. It rates for 1/4 to 3/4 but cna handle much more it is amazing. If you google Tackle Tour Powell Max 683 CEF you can read the review. For spinnerbaits I prefer a more moderate rod. For spinnerbaits up to 1/2 ounce I have an old Cotton Cordell rod he designed for just that use. For larger ones I use a bass Pro Extreme 6'6 mh 3/8 to 1 rod. I use several G Loomis classic bass series SJR 721 and 722 for most of my finesse baits. I hope that helps a little. Quote

Some people spread a list like this by techniques where I feel it is best separated by weight. The power of a rod may not cover the full range of weights well but will do more than technique well. In the case here I have a sc5 610mxf that I run with my le70mhf. The lighter rod is everything it's bigger brother is but is way better on the lighter baits. 3-4" keitech swing impacts and easy shiners along with hud grass minnows are better fished on the 610 because it loads the rod better and the alphas casts the lighter baits better. So if your building rods you may want to keep with this train of thought. Quote

Once money is removed from the equation people think the more $ the better something will be but that won't always be the case. Is a MB arms challenge rod going to be the best for X technique over say a $400 Loomis or a custom built rod to someone's exact specs? I don't think so for other than the fact the rod will be more collectable, rare, hold more value, and look like a museum piece. These kinds of threads are popular this time of year. Best advice would be to fish a wild array of tackle from various manufactures and fish them a lot. Figure out what you like about them and see if one stands out to you. If you like bits and pieces of each rod manufacturers offerings consider a custom built rod. Perfect for the picky angler that wants super technique specific stuff with an high dollar budget! Quote
