Jig vs Crawdad

I am curious, if a Jig is suppose to kinda replicate a crawdad (if you work it like a crawdad) why do I catch more bass with a jig then I do with a plactic Crawdad (same weight and color)? That plastic Crawdad is what I use for a trailoron my jig.

I catch a lot of bass & big bass on Texas Rigged craw worms. I don't use the same weight as my jigs, usually 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4 oz bullet weights.

Craw worms are one of the most over looked soft platic made.

Jig trailers like Rage Tails with fast flapping claws look more like a baitfish than a craw to me, never watch a crawdad flap it's claws ever, they kick tail to move fast. Movements create a look that bass mistake as a live critter therefore possible food.

I use the same jig with different colors from basic white for Shad imitator, greens tones for bluegill or sunfish, brown/purple or black/blue tones for crawdads and they all work and look to me like any of the prey they successfully imitate.

When Berkley came out with the power craw years ago, I caught hundreds of bass, both species with them either Texas rigged or on a jighead. If I wanted a smaller profile, just bit some of the worm end off a bit. I’ve probably caught twice as many fish on craw type baits than on jigs over the years, but it’s mostly because I’ve used craws more

( confidence thing).

Catt nailed it for me too. You get a bigger profile and different rate of fall (rof) with a jig versus a plain plastic craw. I also like to fish the craw with lighter weights. A small plastic craw on a light slider head catches me some really nice fish every year.

Do you fish them more ? I catch more on the Texas rigged craw these days because I fish them more .

Well, maybe lately I fish Jigs more cuz I have been more successful with them. However, I haven't used any small plastic crawdads in a long time, mainly cuz the perch wont stay away from it, but I am going to try that again.

I like the old Larew Salt Craw. The thing falls slow and holds up well.

 Some local guys have one called the HI def craw that really looks good. They are a hand painted soft bait and they have designed a jig head just to rig with them . I haven't had a lot of time with them yet but they look promising.

@rangerjockey the HiDef Craw is an amazing bait. A buddy of mine is a part owner of Tacklehd and honestly, I haven't seen a craw this realistic, ever. I fish craws almost exclusively for smallies in creeks. I am excited to get after them this coming week.

As some have said most of my jig fishing(which is alot) I feel I am imitating baitfish more than anything else. I will at times use markers to match orange claw tips to match the crayfish at certain times of the year but i think they are keying in on the color more than how its worked

Jigs can replicate a vast variety of forage. Everything from brim to even small rodents. It just depends on your color selection and skirt style. Try throwing those craws on standup jig heads and see if it improves the bites you get. Jigs allow the craws to stand up as designed. Trigs tend to fall over.

Darren "Mad Man" Mooneyham's craw tube was actually molded from a real crawfish.

 

I've never had much success with the craw tube but the craw worm is a killer!

I probably catch better numbers on craws/creatures than jigs, but not always. I prefer a jig in off colored of choppy conditions more than a plain creature.
