Reel Suggestions/input

Hey Guys, 

       New here, but have been lurking for a while. I'm in the market for another casting reel. It will go on a Dobyns extreme HP 744. I use it to throw 3/8-1/2oz jigs. 

 

I currently have Tatula CT's and a couple SV103's. With the lack of SV103's now, I'd like to step up a bit. I'm considering a Zillion SV TW, Steez SV, Steez SV TW. 

 

Goals:  I'd like a reel thats as solid/smooth as my SV103's, but smaller and lighter. (I like how my tatulas palm better than how the sv103's do). 

 

Do I need to forget the Zillion SV TW? and move up to the Steez offerings? Any other reels I maybe forgetting(I'm not married to Daiwa, but I love the SV reels)? I'm "ok" spending the money on a new steez, but I'd rather spend less if I can achieve my goals. Will the Zillion SV TW feel lacking compared to my SV103's ? 

 

I can't seem to find any major changes between the steez sv and steez sv tw, other than the t wing, anything I'm missing there? 

 

No local (or even remotely local) stores carry zillion or higher-end reels near me....

The sv-103 is one of the smoothest reels I have ever fished.  If you are looking for something for a little liter work the alphas are amazing.  They are by far my favourite.  The steez is super and very light.  My steez is on my jig rod and that's where it's going to stay.

Zillion SV TW is the same frame as the CT, CT Type R, and Tatula CT SV TW. The SV103 is one heck of a smooth reel but the Steez sV TW is the best/smoothest I've used. It's a very small , light weight reel with a lot of power. I've used mine on my jig rod for the past year and it stays there.

I was planning on getting a couple Zillion SV TWs to add to my arsenal. But the price on the Steez SV on TW is very tempting. I’d the Steez SV worth it and appropriate for an all purpose bottom contact reel, even pitching into cover? I know the Steez SV TW is well regarded but that’s pushing the budget. Haven’t heard much about the regular Steez SV.

price: I guess thats the question: how much do I need to spend to get a reel as "nice" as a SV103, but lighter weight and smaller. The Zillion SV TW is my big question. Does it fit the bill? Or is the made in Japan SV103 superior to the Zillion? If so, I think I'd like to try a steez.... but if I can save money, quite a bit here... the zillion has my eye. even at $350 for the Steez SV, the Zillion SV TW's can be found around $230 or less. Thats a big price jump. I'm not sure how much the t-wing is worth to me, but it seems like that costs $150 more in the steez line(while the SV only options last) right now. I can't seem to find any real differences between the steez SV and SV TW, other than the t-wing, anyone know if there are are further differences?

Bearings between the two Steez models seem to be different. The regular Steez SV is just what Daiwa calls ball bearings (BB) and the newer TW version is corission resistant ball bearings (CRBB).  That and the twing plus an additional bearing are the differences on paper. I’m betting the twing makes the ergonomics at the front of the reel different too.

Go for the Steez. I get the impression that you really want to get it but need a little confirmation for some of us. I have a Steez and an SV103. Love both but 2 different reels. The Steez really palms nicely and is lightweight. The SV103 is a tank in comparison. Love the solid feel of the SV103. I will be adding more of each this season.

I haven’t heard a bad thing about the new Curado but it’s quite heavy for a small reel. Also, sounds like you’re deadset on Daiwa. I don’t know enough about their lineups besides stay away from the Lexas, and for that reason, I’m out.

I have the same rod and use it for the same purpose with a Chronarch MGL.

Steez or a Chonarch MGL is what I would go with, maybe if you're looking for a bit more budget a Curado 70.

I am a fan of Diawas.  Looks like that is what you would prefer to stick with.  You might want to consider the Steez so you won't feel the need to upgrade from the Zillion at a later date.  Unless you would like to have both. 

 

I know I am in the minority here, but 2 other reels to consider are the Primmus and Helios Air.  The Primmus is "hand-tuned" from the factory....whatever that is.  All I know is it is great out-of-the-box.  Both reels are light at 5.8 and 5.6 oz. respectively.  I can't comment on longevity, but I can say both reels cast extremely well.  Excellent distance.  The Primmus is also almost backlash free with 3/8-1/2 oz. lures...for me.  Actually I don't think I have backlashed it yet with those weights.  I have with 1/4 oz.  I have over-run the Air a couple times, but can't remember a backlash with it.  The Air comes with ABEC5 bearings.  No need to upgrade them.

I would say go lews tournament pro g I have it and throw jigs but also t-rigs and it is amazing. I honestly can’t tell you the last time I got a backlash on it and I use it like 5-6 days a week (when there’s no ice) and just absolutely love it. I have the settings way low and still have no issues with 12 pound fluorocarbon. It’s lightweight and small but has good line capacity and it’s cheaper than the steez. That’s what I have to say but I’ve always liked lews over any of the jdm reels but that’s just my personal preference. Good luck
