IMX comparable

12 years ago G Loomis IMX rods became my 'sweet spot' in terms of sensitivity for the dollar.

 

I never felt like I could drop the bucks for a GLX. And never had a strong urge to look outside the IMX line when it came to throwing soft plastics / jigs.

 

That was a long time ago - the last few years I haven't fished as much since my 3 kiddos have come on the scene.

 

So what is comparable in today's market?

 

What's the current market equivalent to a 2007 IMX in terms of sensitivity and at comparable price point?

 

There are so many new brands / offerings I know nothing about (***, etc)

 

Any help appreciated

The good news is that now there are a ton of options for great rods in the $200-$250 price range.  The IMX and Avid lines are still considered amongst the best bang for the buck in the industry, but you'll hear a ton of opinions from a ton of different forum members all based on their tastes.  What type of rod are you looking for?  What kinds of grips do you prefer?

Right now I'm looking for the 'all purpose' plastics rod –Medium Heavy, fast tip. Open to the idea of new or non traditional grip, but just as happy with traditional. I'm intrigued by some of the new names, ***, etc. Just don't know where to go to get opinions – except here)

What's your budget?  The old IMX rods are still considered great sticks, if you still have them.  If you want to try something different at the $200 mark, the Avid and Avid X lines from St Croix are still really, really good and won't break the bank.

Got to agree with Mr. turkey.  I would still look to the IMX, 

I would also look at the classic mag series MBR 843

There is a reason so many people use the IMX and Avid line. I had the chance to fish one of the new IMX Pro rods late last season and it was a bit to fast for my tastes. For my fishing the Avid is the benchmark I use to judge all other rods both in action and sensitivity.

 

One rod line I really like is the Dobyns Sierra series. Its not as sensitive as an Avid or an IMX but for the fishing I do the slightly slower actions really help me in landing more fish. One thing to note about them is they tend to be tip heavy when compared to an Avid or IMX so a super light weight reel wouldn't be the best choice imo.

I fish a lot of IMX rods as well as some Dobyns, Powells and Irods. I suggest before you make a purchase get an Irod Genesis II or Air in your hand. I have a couple of Powells, including an older Powell Max ( Max 3 D now) 683 CEF which is my go to jig rod. In fact it is the most versatile rod of all my 14 baitcasters.  Some of my other rods are Dobyns Champion XP series and I am thrilled with them as well.

 

My IMXs are from the "classic bass" series and are just hard to beat.  So if you can find a local shop that carries some of these different brands go put some new sticks in your hand. I guarantee you will be amazed how light some of the newer rods are.  One more thing that was mentioned make sure you test the rod out by putting a couple of reels on it to see it's balance. 

The place I think that has changed the most is the reels. You will find all kinds of changes in them. The choices in reels costing between $100 and $200 is amazing.  That is another conversation though!

I really really like my IMX rods... they just fish "right". However, I am appreciating what Kistler rods are bringing to the table- both the Magnesium and Helium series. I'd dare say there's more bang for the proverbial buck with them right now IMHO.
