Jeepin Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Hey guys I am actually new to jig fishing and wanted to have my main focus this year on mastering jigs. With that being said I was wondering what set up you guys reccomend for a good jig rod. I am partial to g loomis as I've tried alot of other stuff and just have always ended up going back to loomis rods. I bought a bunch of seibert sniper jigs that I can probably utilize with my nrx 852s somewhat but with the seibert grid iron in 3/8 And 1/2 I need a good setup. Also thought of using braid and tie on a liter with the new setup. Thanks guys! Quote
PAbasser927 Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Most people seem to favor the 7'5" rods out the NRX lineup. For 3/8 and 1/2 ounce jigs, this would fall right into the wheelhouse of the the 894c JWR. If you are mostly dragging in open water, away from cover, you could probably get away with the 893c JWR for your weight range. The 893 is regarded as one of the best rods of all time in regards to sensitivity. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 14, 2018 Super User Posted January 14, 2018 My suggestion is 854C if your presentation is casting and retreiving jigs and big worms. Not a fan of long jig rods, they don't offer anything you can't do with less effort with rods between 6'10" to 7'3", unless you are pitching jigs or flipping jigs. 4 power NRX is a heavy power rod that can easily cast jigs between 1/2 to 1 oz, although it's rated 3/4 oz. I also don't like using braid with leaders, 2 knots to failure. NRX are expensive rods, you have lots of choices including custom rods between $300 to $400, it's your choice. Tom 1 Quote
Rodney Smith Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 The “best” Loomis rods are the new Conquests. I have the 843C, 844C, and 842S. I sold my NRX to upgrade to one of these and I think they are the best rods I have ever fished. That includes customs and the NRX. I know they are expensive, but you don’t have to pay full price. Jeepin Posted January 14, 2018 Author Posted January 14, 2018 Thanks for reccomendations I did have have alot of those rods in mind already except for the conquest. I havnt heard much about them from people but I'll have to check them out but, wow what a price tag lol. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 14, 2018 Super User Posted January 14, 2018 Consider a custom built on the Rainshadow Eternity blank. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 14, 2018 Super User Posted January 14, 2018 Look at a rep sample New GLX 844 or 894. The 3 powered Loomis rods won't make great 1/2 oz jig rods with trailer. You can find rep samples of these rods at places like the TackleTrap for around $350. The MBR 844 will be more versatile too. For around $400 the NRX 873 fishes between the 894 and 893 in power and is a great 3/8 and 1/2 oz jig rod. 1 Quote
Jeepin Posted January 15, 2018 Author Posted January 15, 2018 Thanks I will look into those as well. Where is the best place to get the beat deal on these rods? My wife was nice enough to buy me my other NRX for a present, completely unexpected, and she paid retail ?. Other loomis I used coupons at cabelas. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I like the NRX 873 for 3/8 and 1/2. This One. The 894 is a little too tip heavy and the 893 might a little too underpowered. This rod fills that sweet spot right inbetween. Best deals on G Loomis are forums For Sale sections. Just scour around long enough, you'll find a deal. 1 Quote
tim_kovar Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I would recommend the nrx 894, especially if using 1/2 oz. jigs in any cover. Quote
npl_texas Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I bought the NRX 854 for as a dedicated jig rod (mostly 3/8 plus trailer) but I really like them longer so I recently purchased a GLX 894. I haven't had the opportunity to fish it yet but I'm looking forward to it. The lightness and sensitivity of the NRX is amazing. I have a few Dobyn's Champ Extremes and to me they don't come close. Super User fishballer06 Posted January 15, 2018 Super User Posted January 15, 2018 Your 852S is only going to be good for 1/8 - 3/16oz. jigs (once trailer is added) and you're going to be limited to pretty open water. Step up to the 3 or 4 power in a casting rod to use heavier jigs in heavier cover. Then choose the 85" or 89" model depending on how long of a rod you prefer. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted January 15, 2018 Super User Posted January 15, 2018 Don't overlook the GLX, there is just something about it that works for me 1 Quote

I found it for an absolute steal for 292 dollars. To my front door i paid 319 i think because i went with 2 day shipping because it was such a great deal. Best decision i’ve ever made. All thanks to this forum. Quote

Focusing some attention on jigs is highly, highly commendable. Gaining confidence with a jig takes far less effort than you think. It took me years to finally do so because I had this odd notion built up in my head that jigs were this mythical, “expert level” bait...in reality, if you can work a worm or toss a Texas rig, you can work a jig. It worked out in a really funny way for me. One day I told myself “I’m only going to fish a jig today...if I catch nothing it’s ok because at least I’ll get better with them”. I threw this little black and blue jig under a dock, watched my line start moving oddly to the side, went “?”, then set the hook into a nice little 2 pounder. This was on the first cast.... The moral of the story being this...without an idea, without any additional skill beyond my ability to cast under a dock, I immediately caught a bass on a jig. Of course, this was lucky and it doesn’t always work out that way but the point remains. You probably already have the skill set necessary to fish jigs. Quote
