I do however adjust the tension knob & have a well educated thumb. 1
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 14, 2018 Super User Posted January 14, 2018 Shimano for me. Not liking the SV jazz daiwa has on the individual reels I purchased. Think it gives a person a false sense of being good with a bc reel if they are not exposed to other types systems. They arent getting trained, if you will, on using their thumb to help work a cast. So when they go to a different reel they cant use it correctly. Then they blame the reel. The svs system on shimano lets me free up the spool more to my liking not that restrictive feeling daiwa sv wants me to use. For those that are, set and forget, the svs is that way too set 3 brakes and 4 on dial it works with ned rigs up to frogs no changes needed. I felt the stock vbs was restrictive as well on my 50e's and core. Needed lighter brake blocks and better bearings to free them up. With regular red blocks and 2 brakes on it killed the performance but thats how most say they used theirs. Thats fine but when the better svs came along that offered better performance many now dont have the ability to take advantage of the system. They think well I used 2 brakes on vbs so why not on svs. Then going to 3 brakes on svs in their mind makes the reel not as good, wrong, its the user that is not as good. Thats my take between D&S in this litte area. 1
Super User Angry John Posted January 14, 2018 Super User Posted January 14, 2018 I would have to agree on the sv idea, but how many people today now cannot drive stick shift. People want easy and for people who have never used a reel prior to sv may never know that they could be missing something. Get enough new guys needing the technology then it just becomes the way. It's a real good marketing long term strategy. I can't get into the tws thing but there are plenty of good reels from daiwa to have that don't have it.

Thats my take between D&S in this litte area. I tottally agree with you, I like set it and forget it on my old shimano reel 50e. I also know that my curado 70 can cast further if set it right. Rately I bumb up my 50e for all around reel/heavier bait so I change to 1 brake on. But both my curado and scorpion 70 I set to 4 brake on dial to 2 and 4 depend on lure weight and still get equal if not more distance. Now one thing about SV mag Z on daiwa, you would appreciate the system when you hear the click between cast that the MagZ is working. I can cast as light as weightless roboworm on 2/0 EWG hook on my alphas 105. I don't even dare try that on my scorpion 70. Still SV is suffering a lot on distance, I can cast 1/4 oz lure a lot further on my 70 compare to SV. Each reel will have their strong point and better use than other if you know how to use/set them. As much as I like shimano centrifugal brake system I can cast 2-5 oz lure further on my Luna 253 compare to Cardiff. And I can bomb 1 oz lure on my CT type R a mile and a half away.
