When carpeting a jonboat's floor and decks what kind of carpet is everyone using.  I saw some rubber backed carpet at Lowes.  They just ripped a bunch of carpet up a work it is short pile office carpet in good condition.  Would this be acceptable to save me $50, or should I buy the rubber backed stuff at Lowes.

I've used that outdoor carpet at Home Depot, it looks similar to the stuff at Lowes. It didn't last long and it was a real hook grabber.  Do yourself a favor and get some 16oz marine carpet.  Both Cabela's and BPS sell it.

I agree with Cart7.  Buy marine carpet.  It will save you a lot of money in the long run.

I am currently redoing my boat and I am replacing the carpet now.  Buy the marine stuff, i am a college student and I am trying to save money but i was told do not skrimp on the carpet it is a valued protection for your floor.

I used the stuff from Lowes.  It is thick and well made.  On my 09 degree bends you can't see down thru to the backing.  If you compare it to the stuff from Cabaleas it is as good or better.  Cableas does sell different grades.  I have had no problems with hooks getting snagged.  Just my 2 cents.

between your office carpet and marine...

the marine carpets are treated to withstand UV saturation over long term. Most of them are as well actually plastic based rather than fiber based. At the onset you choice will not make much difference...5 years from now it will make a difference.

by outdoor we are not talking about the ugly green plastic stuff are we??? we are talking about the UV treated tight weave regular carpet like you would use on a porch or patio right?

The outdoor stuff will work, it is treated as for UV as well, but comapring it side to side with the marine stuff...the marine is better quality, a softer pile, and seemed more plyable and workable to me.

One of the biggest differences in the pile for marine carpet that's sold for boats, especially bassboats, is it's ability to be snagproof.  With the Lowes/HD outdoor carpet, the weave was such that a hook just looks at that stuff and it's snagged, and pretty good.  Getting it out often wound up tearing the pile and would start a runner.  Have that happen a few times a trip x how many trips a year x a couple years = shot carpet within 2-3 years.

Now add UV rays, dragging sand or mud into the boat along with water that invariably gets in on any trip and that stuff just deteriorates too fast.

When you consider you can buy 16oz marine carpet for around $6 a foot, 6 foot wide, the cost difference doesn't justify it.

Get out of Lowes for your boat carpet if you have a bass boat. There is Marine grade carpet and there is bass boat marine carpet. As previously mentioned the one you need is snagproof - bass boat marine carpet!

I bought my marine carpet from Bass pro...I would not call it snag proof by any stretch of the imagination.

No carpet is snag proof.  It's the degree of "snagability" I'm talking about.  With marine, a hook that snags beyond the barb can actually be worked out.  Not so with that Lowes stuff,  you're either cutting the pile or tearing the hook out which leads to runners.

Maybe I have just been lucky.  The stuff from Lowes has been great.  Doesn't seem to snag any worse than the carpet in my granfathers Triton.  It also is UV resistent and has a warrenty.  You guys may be right and I may agree w/ you in 6 months but so far it has been alright by me.

I've also had no problem with the HD/Lowes carpet in my Ranger I've had it installed for two years I guess time will tell. No problem with snagging or fraying just take your time and don't skimp on the glue.
