what's the best way to melt plastisol for pouring worm/creature/etc.  that's not a microwave? or am I thinking about this way too much and should just use a microwave?

You can use a hot plate and pans but it is real easy to scorch it that way.

Microwave. Hotplates are the other option but like @Jig Man said you're likely to scorch and waste a bunch of material.

Do folks still use the presto pots?

No, microwave for my soft plastic plastisol fish baits. Just heat more than you need, keep yhe thermal properties on your side.  That way it doesnt require constant heat.

Anything will work that can heat the plastic to like 350 degrees but like others have said an old microwave is easy. Start with 1 minute then use 30 second intervals until you get good pours.

Microwave is the quickest. If I'm shooting a lot of baits, I heat in the microwave and then pour into a fry daddy to keep a consistent temperature due to the large amount of plastic.

get a cheap one from Walmart, don't use the one you use for food

Agreed, don't use one that you cook food in find a spare at a yard sale, craigslist, etc.
