Good St. Croix Rod?

Hey, I want a St. Croix Rod but I don’t know which one to get. I fish mainly for bass. I have the new Curado 200 K. I’m thinking the Mojo Bass Plastic, but would it be a good all round rod for everything?

Listing the rods power, action speed and length goes a long way to help people answer your questions in a helpful way.  In St croix case the blank also helps like sc3.  What is the size of catfish in your area?  I live near memphis and the blue's get over 50 lbs.  Details give better feedback.

EDIT:  Oops.  Just saw that you are going to be using a baitcast reel.  I'm guessing you won't be throwing many 1/16-1/8 oz. lures.  What weights do you plan on fishing?

I know a serious catfisherman that caught one about 35 lbs.

I won’t throw light baits with this rod but probably up to 1.5 oz ish.

Why don't you just get an ugly stick for catfish? Maybe get a spinning reel cheap one? I personally wouldn't want to get cat fish bait on my curado or on the handle of any of my st croix's. You don't need an expensive reel or an expensive rod for catfish nor do you need a sensitive rod.

I don't know what lures you will be using for panfish, but I doubt a rod that will handle 1.5 oz. ish will also handle a panfish size lure if those panfish include bluegills and sunfish types.

Sorry your requirements are too vague and you’re trying to do too much with one outfit covering panfish all the way to catfish. The Mojo Bass Plastics casting rod, I assume you mean the 7’1” M/F, will be great for bass. But it’s not a rod for panfish or catfish.

This 1.5 ounces is it a lure or a weight with bait.  I fish lures in this size range and the 7'4" avid blank is great.  They may have it in the avid x series and it goes 2oz on a swaiver 168 no sweat.  This rod is a heavy and you could catfish pike and swimbait with liteer baits no problem.

That’s true, I do have a cheap zebco spinning combo that’s rated for 50 lb line, I forgot about it, I don’t use it much.

This may sound like a glib comment, but it's actually pretty good advice  -- In fact, inexpensive MH ugly stick and MH Shimano in spinning are what I use for live bait "River Roulette Fishing", as I call it (cast a live bait rig into the lower stretches of a river, especialy below a dam, you can and will catch anything of any size, including cats, bass, pike, musky, walleye, drum, bowfin, gar, suckers, buffalo, carp...).

A GX2 works decently for Catfish, but I'd suggest a Cabela's King Kat combo if you are looking for a catfish rod on the cheap ($45 I think but they go on sale time to time). I would suggest the a medium heavy, probably 7' or 8' so you can throw the proper catfish weights as well. If you have a little more money, try a Rippin' Lips Super Cat with a Daiwa Regal Bri 4000, which is a double drag reel with tons of drag, great for catfish!

 

The plastics rod might be the best rod for both soft plastics, smaller spinnerbaits and the like and may be passable with crankbaits with some 10 or 12lb mono. The Jig / Bait rod would be just as good of an all around bass rod which is MH/F, but that would be worse with crankbaits but would have the backbone for things like jigs and frogs in lighter cover. The spinnerbait rod is great for moving baits and should work well with cranks too, but you'd be missing out the responsive tip for soft plastics.

It all depends what you want to fish really.

It all depends what you want to fish really.

I want to fish cranks, soft plastics, jigs, topwaters and spinnerbaits. I would probably only use cranks that go down to 10 feet or so.

That helps! In that case, I would start with the plastics rod. The St. Croix spinnerbait rod is a great rod for most moving baits but you would lose out the fast tip for soft plastics however, but if you wanted to add that later on, then I would consider the Jigs / Baits rod which will be worse for treble hooked baits now but give you the extra strength for jigs.
