geneoh Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 South metro, wt 58. Bass were active, caught a bunch but no giants. Anything moving would of worked today, I did most of my damage on a chatterbait. Quote
rascalP Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 I'm a weekend worker, so I gotta wait till Tuesday afternoon. Then a couple days in Chisago area. I was on Chisago last Wednesday panfishing. Bass were going better than the pannies, but we got enough for a couple meals. That lake got HAMMERED all winter long. I'm sure there are a few freezers packed with sunnie/crappie fillets. I've always said the possession limit is the most broken game law. Quote
Jmhalvo Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Amazingly, Sat am water temp here on the Alexandria Chain was only 43 (L Carlos ice had only been totally out for 7days). That has to be a record, or close to it. I didn’t even see minnows let alone bass. I traveled about 2 miles of bulrushes on the north end without fishing, and saw 4 crappies and 2 bass in the gin-clear water (zebra mussels). Without wind, the bottom is completely visible at any depth light penetrates due to the mussels. No doubt this ecosystem is completely changed. It’s very pretty but it can’t be good for fishing. Sorry to heat that, i was worried for ya when you said you were going to that area. Im waiting 2 weeks to fish up north. Quote

I went out with my Father on Saturday evening in his boat and the water temp was still a frigid 45 degrees. I think the bass are still hibernating and it was PIKE city! I can't believe the water is already 58 in the south metro. That's a significant gap from what I saw. Looks like 80's most of the week so I think I'll wait for the water to warm up some. Quote

sully420 Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 It was just right this weekend. Probably spawning next week. I was at crooked lake today and the bass were post spwan at least the big females that spawned first. In saturday i got em pre spawn on LOI. Quote
Jmhalvo Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 I have never had a great day on the Mnpls Chain. Stumped. Quote
sully420 Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 There was lots of pressure. I was lucky i got to the good stuff and fished it fastest. Quote
dsidle61 Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Hope everyone enjoyed the opener. I only got out for a few hours. Landed a 5lber in the first 10 mins. Lost another close to the same size about 10 mins after that then went dry. What can you do! Also I was wondering if anyone had any info on Spurzem Lake out in Medina. I’ve read winterkill in 2014 but DNR says no winterkill. Just wondering if it holds anything worth dropping the boat in for. 1 Quote
Jmhalvo Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Hit my trusty Yak lake today, lotsa fish in 4 ft. Best bait by far was weighted coffee fluke- thx for the tip FryDog! 2 Quote
punch Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I've been out the last few days around the north metro. The fish are up REALLY shallow and look to be ready to spawn any day now. On Saturday/Sunday/Monday I was able to catch a bunch of fish right up on the bank w/ spinnerbait and a ton on a weightless stick bait. Today we hit a muddier lake and the fish didn't want ANYTHING. I got one on a dropshot in like 3 hours of fishing. Guess I couldn't have 4 straight days of a good bite haha. 1 Quote
drscholl14 Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Saturday I found the same thing as Popper Ninja. Bass were way back in flooded bushes and trees and chomping. My best five weighed just over 17. I didn't see a single bass cruising the shallows, or on beds. Water temps on White Bear have been mid 50s all week. A smaller lake just east was in the low 60s yesterday but NOTHING was biting. Had one swing and miss on a Spook and caught another on a texas rigged structure bug in a laydown. 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted May 16, 2018 Author Super User Posted May 16, 2018 Small lake in West metro yesterday was 62 degrees. Anyone seen temps on the Mississippi in the north metro? I might head there Fri or Sat. Quote
FishingMN Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 visibly noticed 20 or so bass over a 600 foot section cruising in 3 fow or less in water ~63degrees with mostly sandy bottom and some weeds mixed in around docks. Tried throwing small crankbaits, curly tail worms, senko, weightless fluke, tried staying far away casting with as long as possible casts, and really only got 1 to bite after fan casting for almost 2 hours.. Is this a mid spawn attitude? Or am I doing something wrong? There were also plenty of sunfish/crappie around. Perhaps they weren't hungry? They didn't seem to be pinned to a particular spot/bed. just cruising. Quote
starkeer Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I have had a few fun mornings in a row on Lake of the Isles. Lots of good sized fish including this healthy 18 incher. Caught most fish on wacky rig, and chatterbait, with a few nice fish caught on a jerkbait as well. Quote

My guess is they are still searching for the spawning areas and aren't protecting beds so they aren't quite to that "spawn level" of aggressiveness. I'm glad to hear other people found a tough bite the last few days. I was starting to wonder after having a great trip on Opener and then having two tough days Sunday and Monday. 1 Quote

My guess is this next week will be better BUT of course now the weekend weather looks ready to shut some of that down a bit. It’s always something! 1 Quote
OperationEagle Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Hey guys...a major uplift in sharing of what is working at what depth...from more metro fishers. I love to see this! Quote
FishingMN Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 If water temp is 70, and some bass found on beds. Where is best place to go to target the other bass (the ones that I assume are not spawning..they don't all spawn at once right?) Quote
