We're starting to see some melting around the shoreline, but I'm still seeing people on the ice. It's still going to be a bit before we have open water on even the smaller lakes/bays of 'Tonka even with the 60s and 70s predicted for the next week.

What’s the latest prediction for “ice out” date?

No predictions yet, but Lake Pepin on the Mississippi has been declared ice-free - first lake in MN to clear.

I'm thinking it's going to be at least a couple weeks for the main lake, week to week-and-a-half for the smaller bays/lakes.

Once Emerald is clear, I'm taking the canoe out, I don't care about the big bays.

Man, that sucks.  I was hoping to get out there to panfish in a week.  Thanks for the update.

is FG knot best for leaders?

FG knot is good! There's a lot of good leader knots out there. Blood, FG, and the RP (royal polaris) are popular. Try em and see which ones you like the best. I'm a RP knot kinda guy personally.

Oh another note.. she's home!

It's a 2002 sx190 with a 150 vmax. It's in fantastic condition and was under 12k. It's my first fiberglass bass boat. Been a long time coming!

I snuck out for an hour today over lunch and ran the skeet, she's fast! I rigged a HDS12 and HDS7 gen 3's and everything worked, although I need to adjust the transducer angle a little bit. I'm surprised at how quick and smooth the hole shot is.

South Dakota does too... just make it all C&R in Minn

Right...we would have had this week, but I’m sure not that many other folks would be out. It’s all about the walleye as we know. But that also means we are a small group who’s concerns are not widely held. In other words: ignored. No one cares but us few bass guys, so.....doubt we will see a change.

Please tell me if I’m wrong

Hows it goin! I'll be coming up to Minnesota from Maryland this summer for an internship. I'm going to be situated in Winona, and was just wondering what the fishing is generally  like on the Mississippi and little lakes. I'm mostly a bass fisherman but after reading through this forum a bit I see that a lot of the focus is on Walleye? Is the bass fishing still reasonable? Any general things I should know about Minnesota's fishing?

MN bass fishing is awesome but It’s a big state- Winona’s totally diff than Central MN which is totally diff than Northern MN. But because everyone ELSE is after walleye......

Well it looks like we have ice out pretty much everywhere in the metro on up towards St Cloud and towards Mille Lacs.  Tonka tied a record that had been held for 171 years!  Now the question is how many of these bigger lakes up north will be ice free by opener?  I'm gonna say that the bigger ones still have ice by Saturday but go ice free a few days after that.

I got my boat out yesterday for the first time this season just to make sure everything was running properly.  I didn't find any issues and equipment was operating as normal.  Water temp was 50.5 degrees.

I went to college in Winona. Your best bet is going to be the river. Pool 7 (La Crosse area) is considered by some, to be one of the better bass fisheries in the country. Winona is on pool 6, which isn't too bad. If youre fishing from shore, there is access to some of the backwaters by the airport and Prairie Island Rd.

Where is everyone fishing for opener?

Word is Mille Lacs is looking open'ish. Should be good by the weekend.

Had the boat out on Tonka this past weekend to knock the dust off of it.  Water temps in Grays and Wayzata were about 50-51, down in the lower lake it was down to 48-49.  Will probably duck off to a smaller body for the opener, probably out in Carver.

There is still a significant ice flow on the west side of Mille lacs. Don't end up like the titanic fellas
