Ned Rig Spinning Reel Size ?

Would the below be accurate for choosing a Ned Rig spinning reel size ?

 

2000 / 2500 series : If using braid + leader (i.e. #10 lb. braid + #8 lb. FC leader )

3000 series if using straight FC  , co-poly or mono line (i.e. #6 lb. ~ #8 lb. FC)

 

*I'm thinking the larger spool 3000 series would handle light FC , co-poly or mono line  better where as the 2000 / 2500 series is better suited for the braid + leader set up ? ... Thanks in advance for replies as to what  spinning combo reel / line you use for the Ned Rig .

I use a size 25 Pflueger, which is in the 2500/2000 size range. I'd use the same size if I was going to fish fluoro/mono/copoly.

I use the Pfluegers 30 series and I use braid. I believe either 25 or 30 is good for braid, mono, or FC.

I use 3000 size Shimanos and 2500 size Daiwas for everything.

 

Then again I only use braid to leader.

Given that I would definitely recommend a braid + flouro, or in my case I go with straight braid......at 2500 reel should be fine for using on a Ned Rig setup.

Thanks - I ask because I have read where some folks are having less mono / FC line twist with the slightly larger spool of the 3000 series (which I don't own) ... Doesn't sound like it is enough to be concerned with though as I should be fine with my President 2000 series ... *I'm just looking for an excuse to say I need a new Daiwa Revros spinning reel (lol !)

Mono and braid are fine on a 2000.  I have no issue with 6lb sniper or pine 100%.  If you plan on heavier flouro it's the only line you need to step up for.  If that is a line you use a lot the extra weight may be worth it.

A 1000 would be just fine with braid + leader. 10# or 15#

braid with leaders from 4-15#. My usual leader sizes are

6, 8, and 10# either Yo Zuri Hybrid or Gamma Edge FC.

 

Honestly, I've *never* even been close to being spooled

even after a LOT of bass over 6 pounds, hard fighting

striper, etc. 1000 size Stradics are all I use.

 

2000, 2500, 3000 are all fine, too, especially if you use

a longer rod and want better balance. I just prefer smaller

and lighter setups (and shorter rods). 

 

@roadwarrior (correct me if I'm wrong), uses straight fluoro

on his 1000 Stella.

Last year I used a 1500 size reel with 6lb mono and or 8lb Kastking Fluorokote line.

 

I am going to try using a 2000 size reel this year with 20lb braid plus 8lb Kastking Fluorokote leader.

I use a 2500 size spooled with 20# braid with a 6-8# flouro leader. This allows for long cast which is crucial in the clear water I fish. If I get snagged at least the leader breaks off and I don't lose any of my main line, also after a long cast there's still a good bit of line left on the reel it's self which help keep the retrieve rate of the reel on the higher side. I actually use my dropshot setup for Ned rigs and it's worked awesome thus far. Also it's a ton easier to tie the main line to your leader if they're close to the same diameter, this is why I use 20# braid.

I can see where a 1500 series to 2500 series reel would be in the Ned rig range - then it becomes a factor of rod length and achieving the best balance to determine reel size ... Good comments !

I use a Pflueger president limited edition 6930 and it works perfect. I use 14 pound nanofill with a 8 pound leader. I know the limited edition isn’t out anymore but the president XT is almost the exact same thing just a slower ratio.

I use a 2500 size from shimano and daiwa, I also run braid to flourocarbon leader.

Just use the reel that balances best with the rod and try not to over think it. Line management is much more about the specific build of reel and the user's habits than anything. Ive went up and down on line diameters with different reels many times. When comparing standard "bass sized" spinning reels, never saw much difference in line management or casting. 

 

        I used to have the idea I'd cast much father years ago using 12oz 6740 sized pfluegers, which are bigger and definetly heavier than most bass fisherman even use. Compared side by side with a 6730 with the same line, lure, and rod one day and found no real difference surprisingly. My wrists liked the change however. There are now larger reels that are much lighter, so if u have a decently stout 7' Med rod with a good sized 1st guide, go for it. If youre rod is lighter, perhaps shorter,  or with a smaller 1st guide a quality 2000 sized will work great.

This is what I was thinking.  I fish ned rigs (and similar "plastic body on a jighead" presentations) on 25, 30, or 35 pflueger, depending on which combo I happen to be using to throw it. My 25 reel has braid-to-leader, 30 has 6# copoly, and 35 might have braid or 8# mono or copoly depending on what I happened to spool it with. I've never thought that the size of the reel itself was a critical factor in fishing somehing like a ned rig.

One word: BRAID.

Oh, and just about any spinning reel size will work, with larger reels (obviously) casting farther but smaller reels being lighter and more comfortable. I think I have a 30 size pfluegar president on my ned rod, but even a tiny 20 will work.
