I was out at Lake Castaic today and caught what I thought was a LMB. However, upon further inspection of the photos taken, I'm a bit confused if it was a smallie or perhaps something like a florida-strain? Does anyone have any idea what I caught based on the striations? Thanks.

Florida strain is just a strain of LMB. I believe Castaic has Florida strain LMB, but no real way to tell if one is or isn't that I'm aware of. Either way, that fish is for sure a LMB.

Only a DNA test can determine Florida bass vs regular lmb. I thought all bass in California were Florida Strain. Definitely not smallmouth

That is a LMB in his underwear.  If you had caught him when he was fully dressed, he would have had darker black lines along his side and a tophat on.

No, we didn't get FLM until 1959, when they were planted in San Diego County.  I live in "Northern California" and some lakes have FLM and others just northern LM.  The lakes nearest to where I live only have northern LM.

Interesting. So they were stocking bass in Cali pre 1959? That would be pretty cool to see back in the day

@TnRiver46,

I have a book "Inland Fishes of California" (2002) that states "Northern largemouth bass were brought into California from Illinois in 1891".

The Sacramento Perch is the only member of family Centrarchidae native to California.  Everything else (smallmouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, etc.) was introduced.

Pretty cool. We have rainbow trout in Tennessee from the late 1800s, wonder if we traded bass for trout? Haha
