Frank White Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I'm having a hard time figuring out what baitcasting reel to buy. Going to be my first one. Either a Shimano Curado K 201 HG or a Pfluger supreme xt. Anyone got any advice or maybe another baitcasting reel that's really nice. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 I only use Shimano reels. I have several models with Curado 200 being the one I have most. I'd say anything from the Citica up will do you a good job. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 Of those two, the vast majority will suggest the Curado. However, there are a few (very few?) people here that have used the Supreme XT and feel it is an excellent reel for the money. I haven't used either of those models, but I do have reels from both brands. I like them both and feel Pflueger baitcast reels don't get the respect they deserve. smalljaw67 likes the Supreme XT a lot, and one of the moderators also uses a few Pluegers and likes them. I have used the older Trions and Patriarch XTs and found both to be very good reels for the money. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 Get the K and not have buyer remorse. 2 Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 Since it's your first one I think you should go with the curado it's more forgiving and easy to learn. You will probably get lots of different opinions on this one. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I just received my curado k and love everything about it except the weight. It's the only reel over 7oz that I use now. 1 Quote
thinkingredneck Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I love my Pfluger Supreme. Cannot speak to the other one. Pflugers are work horse reels. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 Curado K, hands down best reel out there under $200 in my opinion. 1 Quote
kschultz76 Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 Of the two you mentioned I’d go with the Curado K, though I have no experience with either of those specific reels. I have many Shimanos and like them all including a Chronarch MGL that has the same braking system and micro module gearing as the Curado. However if if this is your very first baitcaster and you’re going to learning with this new reel I’d really recommend the Daiwa Tatula SV TW. I think it is a great platform, fantastic value for its price, and hands down the most forgiving braking system and spool out there. You may give up a tiny bit in max distance, but you’ll gain a ton of control, accuracy, and frustration free casting. Good luck and enjoy it! 1 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 I can recommend the Daiwa Tatula SV from experience, it's definitely a great braking system. I bought a Pflueger Supreme XT for my son for Christmas too, I got it for under $100 on ebay with a 20% off code. Haven't got to use it yet but I've heard only good things and my experience with Pflueger is their reels generally last a lifetime. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 Are you looking for the best value or something shiny and new. What is the budget. You can get a clean TDZ for around 200 which i would put against anything out there or for around 150 you can get an original fuego with the mag frame for 150. An alphas can be had for 1-200 based on condition and will take a DIY spool that will toss trout baits on the right rod.... Left or right??? Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 TackleTour.com just did a review of the new curado K and gave it high remarks. Very informative article. Quote

I've always thought the original Fuego slipped through the cracks somehow. Seems to be underrated by most. Paid $75 for the last one I bought. Very good shape. Plan on giving it to either my brother or his wife. Neither have used a baitcast reel, but are willing to try. Know where there is another for the same price, but haven't seen a picture of it so no idea what shape it is in. May have to pick it up if it looks nice. Quote
Logic04 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Can't say much about shimano reels but I can vouch for abu garcia. I've strictly used abu garcia reels for the past year and without a doubt I can recommend them. The build quality and smoothness is unparalleled to other reels I highly recommend you consider an abu reel Quote

Thanks looks like I’ve got something to read tonight! I was disappointed in their Metanium MGL review though, lacked a lot of the normal detail and analysis even though they gave it high marks. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted January 3, 2018 Super User Posted January 3, 2018 Since I first tried a Daiwa Tatula three years ago, I have gotten rid of all of my Shimanos and a few BPS in favor of over a half dozen Daiwa Tatula, Tatula Type Rs , one Exceler, and a Tatula CT. I would strongly recommend the Daiwas with the Mag Force Z brakes. The Tatula CTs, CT Type Rs, or a Tatula SV TWS. Take your pick there is no wrong choice there. Quote

Finish not critical for me, but I want to give this to relation so I want a nicer looking reel. May give one of mine. If you are interested, look at the 2nd page on that other well known forum that sells rods and reels and boats. Quote

Just doesn't feel right on the rod I got it for. Quote

When I was buying my first one last spring, I did the same sort of research as you, and I came down to deciding on the Diawa Tatula CT 100. No regrets. Easy-peasy to get fishing right off the bat. I followed the instructions that are available in several places online (and the setup is different from most other brands). I had been fishing for nearly 2 hours before I got lazy and had my first self-induced backlash. It was fairly minor - only took about 30 seconds to pick out. As long as I use decent technique, I don't have any problems with most baits (I'm not very comfortable with trying to do weightless plastic with it, but I figure that's what I have a spinning rig for). I plan to buy another Tatula this spring, with a better rod to go with it (my current baitcasting rod is a medium weight Ugly Stik). Quote
