JFlynn97 Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I'm looking for a new rod and reel for finesse applications. Namely, something i can throw shaky heads, wacky rigs, ned rigs, etc on. So far I've been looking at the daiwa bg reels, lews tp-1 and custom speed sticks (a bit out of my budget but if it's worth it I'm sure I can make it work) and dobyns fury. I'm open to any suggestions! Quote

I do not have much time on the water with it, but I used to have a pair of Lew's Pro Speed Spins and the BG feels far far smoother and more solid than those reels. 1 Quote
GrumpyOlPhartte Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 Funny you should mention the Daiwa BG reel and the Lew’s TP1 rod. I received a couple of gift cards for Dick’s Sporting Goods and used them for that exact combination. Got the 2500 reel and a 6’8” medium-light rod. For my kayak fishing, the rig works very well. Good for drop-shot, wacky, weightless (and light-weight) T-rigs; even chucked a KVD 1.5 squarebill with no problems. I chose the BG 2500 for it’s large-diameter spool. The reel is a tank and very smooth. Can’t comment on the drag. The combo also feels balanced for me (subjective opinion) There is one other reel at the same price which you may want to consider and that is the Shimano Nasci. I am not a fan of Daiwa bait-casting reels, but when I played with the BG, I did become a fan of their spinning reels. Admittedly I could not find a Nasci to play with, but it might be as good or better. Final thought ... the Pfleuger spinning reels are darned good too. I’d suggest you look at the Pfleuger in your price range. Still use my three-year-old President and can’t say a bad word about it. Hope this helps. Quote

I had a low end Abu break in half just below the bail wire. I loved my Pfluger until I dumped it into the reservoir by accident. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted January 2, 2018 Super User Posted January 2, 2018 I too am looking at picking up a decent medium light rod for drop shotting this year (I have some M/F rods currently, but looking at going lighter). I was thinking about the 6'11" Tatula Finesse Rod, or the 7'1" that is also ML/XF but not listed as a finesse rod and listed for heavier lures as well, simply because my two casting rods are Tatulas. Does anyone know the difference in these rods besides 2"? Since the matching Tatula LT reel is so expensive, I was debating trying a Daiwa BG, 2000 or 2500 sized. They're often used in larger sizes for saltwater, catfish and muskies but I gather they're a fairly solid reel and I'd imagine the smaller sizes are just as good. Cheaper spinning reel options that I could also recommend are the Pflueger President and the Mitchell 308 Pro. I have a Mitchell 300 Pro and a smaller sized Pflueger President, the President seems better built but I like the Mitchell better because it is smoother and lighter and so far it's held up well.
