fishing hat for brutally hot summer days

I need a new hat this summer  , Boonie type . I have a hard time in the heat and humidity so I need whatever keeps me the coolest .  Any recommendations . Ive been looking at Columbia . REI , Ourdoor Reseach and others .

Sunday Afternoon Adventure Hat, same one Rick Clunn and Randy Howell are always wearing, though after looking it up, may not be "Boonie" style. They make lots of other styles too, so sure they probably got you covered. Great hat for the money. Have had mine for half a dozen years or more, and hard to beat the price. Large enough to cover all the important parts, and plenty comfortable.

Agree with team 9 about Sunday afternoon hat. Light as a feather and great sun protection.Had mine for two years

Here's what I use for fishing and for golf:  Tilley Hats

 

They aren't cheap, but but they were originally designed for sailing.  They are just about indestructible.  Machine washable, UV protected, comfortable, and with both a chin and back of neck strap when needed to keep them on in the wind - even at full speed on the boat they won't blow off.  I have one of the standard ones and a light weight one.  The lighter one is great for traveling as it can be easily packed in a suitcase or stuffed into a backpack carry on.  It was my hat for the African safari trip we did 3 years ago.

This is the hat I wear, can't beat it in the summertime. I really like the back flap, keeps the sun off my neck.

On really hot days I wear a straw hat with a 4” brim on it. It keeps the sun off and the air flows through the straw. I wear a buff on my head because the straw gets kind of scratchy after a while. I’m not sure what brand it is. My Dad bought it several years ago, and it didn’t have a label in it.

I use the issue boonie hats. If heat is an issue, I can use one of those neck wraps that you soak in water and it provides evaporative cooling.....

^^^this^^^ with my skin started using this light weight hat over 20 years and it still in good shape.

I read up on everyones suggestions then ordered something else . I picked the Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat.  The Adventure hat I was afraid would be   too dorky looking to wear other than fishing .

You're right, I only wear mine fishing.

I use the Adventure hat along with buffs.keep the buffs in the cooler on ice.when the hat get's to hot change to buffs that are cold. works in the summer perfectly.rotate out every so often to keep cool. keep 4-5 buffs in the boat all the time.

Henschel 5220 is my choice.  Nice wide brim and mesh crown.  And doesn't look too goofy to wear out and about.

I have a   hat looks the same from Jacobson . I wear it in mild weather when I'm kicking around in the woods .

They are popular here in southeast but they do need to be sized correctly, they sit on head not by pressure around band. I've used one in hot humid south from golf, to fishing, to beaches, and 7 years in wilderness search and rescue as ground pounder. I wore one out and they replaced for free.....

Tilley is a good hat and I have one a long time that I wear a lot walking, traveling and fishing if it isn't too hot. The Sunday's Afternoon hat is lighter weight, breaths well and shades your head and neck. Both have chin straps, good for the wind and running the boat without worrying about loosing the hat.

 I wear real Boonie hat got as a gift from base. Those are nice and soft and would last a long time. The protection might not be as good as adventure hat but way better looking walking around with it.

 

I lost this fav one last year at lake henshaw waited almost a year before I can find someone to order another one for me.

OR also provides what they call an "Infinite Guarantee", which is basically a lifetime warranty. I'm currently working with them to send my hat back since the brim has lost it's shape enough that it's unwearable (difficult for me to see when wearing). This is 100% my fault as I've washed it several times, shoved the hat in bags, under boat consoles, etc. If they don't feel this warrants replacement I'll have zero issues with that but will be ordering a replacement right away, that's how much I like this hat. I'll just be a little more careful this time around!!

The brim is suppose to stay in place and it also floats . It was the top choice  for boating in one of the reviews I read .

I can confirm it floats.   The brim issues, like I said, are totally my fault. I've folded, rolled up, shoved, etc. my hat in numerous bags and tight spots. Not the best for the integrity of the brim I'm sure.

I wear a trucker style baseball cap (Columbia PFG makes a great flexfit one) with a buff. If It gets real hot I take the buff off soak it and put it back on.
