Why?  You'll need them at some point.  Spool bearings need cleaning and oiling periodically and your brake race needs cleaned and oiled occasionally.  When I started baitcasting I thought I was an expert. I realized over time that I was fishing a gummed up reel and getting half my potential distance,  A good cleaning and lube humbled me real fast. Wind, lure choice, and reel maintenance will dictate your braking needs. Thumb, spool tension, and brakes (cent. or mag) are engineered to work together. If you're leaving one out you're just compensating with the others. Sometimes you need two on and sometimes you need more.

Yes, but why would you want to?

I'll start laughing now in anticipation of some version of "to make my reel lighter", now if you are trying to loose (pun intended) them, then carry on.

Welcome to the forum.  This is a question you could have started a new thread for rather than digging up one this old.  I have accidentally pulled a brake completely off.  Not something I would intentionally do as I can't think of any possible benefit for doing so.

Here ya go, its to get the spool lighter less rotational mass and start up inertia. This to allow a baitcaster to throw a 1/16oz lure 40' 1/32" instead of just a measly 40' you know like the TackleTour aficionados.;);)

If you take 4 of those boogers out and aren't getting at least 9/64" longer casts, you need to spool your 9 carrier braid in a helium filled pressure chamber on the equinox, preferably near the equator (hey sounds like bass guys will buy anything)...

In defense of this member he's new and I think it would better represent these forums to not welcome him by laughing him off the stage.  I can remember some of my logic being pretty laughable in the earlier stages of my learning curve.

You guys cracked me up, lol.  I just ordered an extra spool for my Shimano 300 EJ reel (sea perch reel) to load extra lines for backup but i forgot to order 6 extra brakes for it.  And i don't want to pay another $7 shipping. That's why i want to see if i pull off a couple brakes would sacrifice the casting distance or not.  I am currently using 2 brakes.

Maybe i will try to see if in can use it without any brakes on it.

You are definitely better with a baitcast reel than I am.  There is only one braking system I can use with all brakes off....Magforce 3D...and I am positive there is still braking affecting the cast as there is no way I can cast with "zero" brakes.

I think he wants to take 4 pin off to add on another spare spool that he got with no brake pin. I would say why not if you know you are not gonna need to change your brake setup on that reel. I got quite a few of shimano reel with old style 6 brake pin and all those got 2 on 4 off and never ever change. I also used to have Abu 6500c3 with 2 brake pins completely removed and had no problems with balancing whatsoever.

three brakes per spool might be better... maybe a board member would send you a set for the cost of a postage stamp.
