Siebert Outdoors Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Sitting here thinking about fishing and started to wonder with all the fat ika talk Anyone ever fish it on a drop shot? Anyone ever fish it on a shakey head? Whats your thoughts on these two methods and the ika. Quote
Bud Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I tried it on a shakey head and has no luck with it. Not to say it won't work but it didn't work for me. Quote
basscat73 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Last year I caught one 2lb. smallie on the dropshot rig using a fat ika (skirt down) -- so it did work, once, anyhow! Because the fat ika is a compact bait with little body movement, I probably wouldn't consider it for the shaky head. I think the Ika does it's best work on the fall. For the shaky head, I prefer to use a plastic that has more wiggle to it. Anything is worth a try at least once though! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 18, 2007 Super User Posted June 18, 2007 The vast majority of my strikes (from bigger bass) are on movement AFTER the bait has first settled to the bottom. When rigged skirt up, the tentacles are pushed back when the Fat Ika is moved forward. When it falls, on slack line, the skirt flutters up. This combination is the "action" that triggers a bite. In the aquarium at BPS in Memphis I have watched the bass in the tank when the lure is presented. Generally, smaller bass attacked the lure before the bigger bass would strike. If the bait reached the bottom, the bass would stare at the lure, or appear to watch it intently. Sometimes the bass struck when the bait was initially moved, but more often attacked on the fall after movement. That's how I fish them: slow, weightless and weedless. Quote
Guest avid Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 You will never hear me say that any bait can't be fished successfully any way a person can think of. but the design of the fat ika lends itself to being fished weightless. It has the unique quality of swimming down and away from the angler when rigged skirt up. Then it settles into a sort of shimy horizontal drop. Truly an amazing bait, with a track record of big bass to confirm it's value. Quote
jeepcrazy Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Lost my PB on an Ika yesterday. Big girl spit it back at me, fished just like RW was saying. I have tried it other ways, but tried and true upside down is how I fish 'em. Quote
