Caution, Don't use this reel in salt water!

Aluminum primary gear running on a brass drive gear is galvanic when exposed to salt water will cause catastrophic corrosion when the hard anodic coating wears. Aluminum saves weight but is a soft metal that can't be harden, it can be heat treated for strength, without a hard anodize coating and the coatings will wear in time.

Ya, or you can just give the reel a good  wash down with clean water and lube it back up. Works for me! I kinda like the fact that they are using different materials for the pinion and main gear.

This thread wasn't intended for negative feedback. It is to help anyone that is interested in something find out more from a hands on user. 

 

FYI the gear doesn't make you a better angler.

Out of curiosity why is there so much dislike or disdain for Quantumn reels? I’ve been looking at reels and handling them because I want to add one to my arsenal. Honestly I really liked the Smoke I was looking at and I was handling it next to the Shimano’s, Daiwas, Lews, and Abu’s. I didn’t buy it because I not many people on here have much to say about them. Is it the durability, quality, customer service? I’ve just never seen anyone say what exactly they didn’t like but it’s discouraged me enough not to buy one as of yet.

I fish 'several' of the top tier Quantum Casting reels.  Have been for a while - Probably 10 years now.  They perform well for me.  Like all gear, when used & maintained properly, durability has not been an issue.   

They've been a good value as well.   But most importantly, they have routinely performed perfectly, especially when I needed it most. 

 

Case in point, during a recent trip south of the border (details below) a pair of Quatum EXO 200 reels easily dispatched several, (and I do mean several)  5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and yes even 10lb bass - without missing a beat.

 

 There are always going to be 'stories' regarding most every brand - good & bad.  Either way, it means little to me at this point as I have built a very successful history with this brand.  So rather than acknowledge the foolishness, instead I chose to simply smile and share pictures of the fish my supposedly inferior gear, helps me catch on a very regular bases.  

Get the gear you like and go fishing. 

The bass don't care what you are using.

I have owned 2 Quantum reels, a baitcaster and a spinning, neither lasted more than a couple of years, my oldest reels are Abu XLT Plus, 521 XLT Plus and Ultracast 64, got them more than 30 years ago and they are still in use, then come Daiwas and Shimanos being the oldest a little bit over 20 years old, why would I bother to purchase again a Quantum ?

I own four Quantum spinning reels (Smoke model) and have had great success with them. I also own ABU and Shimano with equal success. Buy the best model you can afford and take care of it and you will be in good shape. Never bought into brand bias, you miss out on a lot when you go that route, Just saying.

To be honest, I've never had a major problem with any of the big brands of reels.  A minor issue with Shimano turned into a ticking match with their customer service that resulted in me vowing to never use them again, but that's another issue. 

 

As far as Quantum goes, I've been extremely satisfied with them.  At one time it was the only brand I had.  I'm still using a 1310 and Pro 1 that are both pushing 30 years old.  I have another 1310, 2 EX's, a US300 and 2 Energy spinning reels that are close to 20.  All have performed perfectly. 

 

I completely agree about not understanding the lack of enthusiasm for Quantum.  I really like them and may even pick up a new one here soon.

Quantum is a great brand and a pleasure to use, Ive got 10 quantum reels which include 4 energy PT's, 2 first gen smokes PT, 3 second gen smokes and the Iron PT for musky. Not a single one has given me any issues, is that just luck of the draw or because I take care of them and maintain when needed? Its obvious that many anglers here are very passionate about the brands they are loyal to, and that's more then fine, I'm guilty of the same as you can tell. I just find that many bash another brand because they had a bad experience or something went wrong due to lack of maintenance, just kind of a low blow IMO. There are good and bad things with everything. I had a issue with my first daiwa, was a tatula HD and instead of complaining or bashing daiwa for it, I opened it up, fixed the issue and never said a word of it since. Now I own 3 more daiwas since then. I think more people need to give the new products a try from quantum and I feel like they will be really surprised with the performance that is delivered from any product that they choose to use.

After handling and messing with some quantum reels I decided to purchase one. I was on the Ole EBay and was searching when I came across a brand new Tour Edition Burner 7.0 for $70 shipped to my door. That was around a week ago and since then I’ve had it on the new rod in the front yard practicing. I must say this reel has made quite the impression on me so far but that isn’t saying much. I’m excited to see what the reel brings to me this year in fishing.

Congrats and good choice! Very unique colour scheme eh hope you enjoy it buddy!! I love how they don't cost an arm and a leg to get a great feature packed reel.

Years ago, I bought a couple budget Quantum spinning combos (maybe $45 each or so.)  Rods broke and reels barely lasted one season.  I knew they were entry level, but I got it in my head for a lot of years that Quantum equaled poor quality. 

    A couple years ago, I got what seemed like a great deal on a Smoke baitcasting reel.  It quickly became my favorite and I now own five Smoke reels (one spinning.) 

    So, I've been on both sides, but I'm squarely on the fan side now.

In your opinion how does the new braking systems on the smoke, tour and vapor compare to the least gens braking system?

So far, the Smoke is my favorite but I have some Vapors on the way to review.  I don't catch anything supersized enough to really test the drag systems beyond what a normal bass fisherman would do and I'm old and experienced enough that I can set brakes up for whatever I may be throwing.  I keep them bait specific so once I set them up they are good to go.  I have not had any problems with Quantum quality other than some of the older models flaking the chrome off the reel body.  Cosmetic problem only.

I've got 2 Smoke spinning reels and never had an issue with either, the speed freak 30 I have is my favorite for fishing over oyster beds for redfish

I love my EXOs!  No problems at all with them. The only thing I noticed is my EXOs consume oil, but I’m ok with that.

Well after reading this thread I decided to go with the Quantum Smoke S3 in 7.3:1 to upgrade my arsenal. 

Bought it today since I had some BP gift cards.  I'll be using this on my plastics rod which I tend to use the most of any of my rods.  

 

It'll be awhile before I can use it though.....maybe I'll go cast it a few times in the yard.

The braking system may take a little getting used to.  Those PT bearings spin up fast.

 

Report back once you get some time with it and let us know what you think.  I am thinking about getting one as well.

I really like the feel of the vapor, reminds my of my energy reels, which I love so much
