basscat73 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I'm interested in finding out what type of transducer most people use for their console finder. I only have a flasher at the moment, but I'm planning to add another finder in the near future, but I'm not sure which type of transducer to go with. Quote
surfer Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 My vote was for the transom mount only because its easier. I dont know whats better. Quote
snapperd1 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Mine is mounted to the trolling motor. But I also fish an electric only lake so no need for the transom mount which would be my second choice. TD Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 13, 2007 Super User Posted June 13, 2007 I have had them on the transom but hope I never have to again. I have 3 on the inside and 1 on the tmotor. They are not hard to install. All you have to do is grind out a place until you get good glass and glue it down. You can even set them to an angle if you want. One of mine I have angled forward and starboard so that it shows a perfect pic in 25fow exactly where the steering wheel is located. It works well for vertical jigging. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted June 13, 2007 Super User Posted June 13, 2007 If you run glass, definitely thru the hull. Quote
basscat73 Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 Yeah, good point. I should add that I'm mainly interested in hearing what people use on glass boats, not aluminum... Quote
llPa1nll Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Maybe not the most popular view but I have a thru hull transducer mount. I must say for the majority of times it works fine but at high speeds and other times it will lose signal. If I end up replacing my transducer on my boat for my console graph I am going to go with a transom mount for sure. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I use a transom mount. It's easy to install and works well. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I recently installed a gps/sonar unit and I epoxyed the transducer unit to shoot thru the hull. It is easy to due if you have easy access to your bildge area. The entire project took about 2 hours to install and 24 hours curing time. After installation you should be thru with transducer problems until your next upgrade. Not so sure of the transom mounts especially if your boat is a 65+MPH boat........................Al Quote
Taliesin Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 My main reason for choosing a thru-hull transducer is that it came with the boat that way. It doesn't loose signal often (unless I am going 65+), but part of that may be the quality of the fishfinder. My biggest problem with it is that I don't know real water temps until I put the trolling motor in. However, since I do have a high-speed boat (75+ mph), a transom mount may not be the best for me either. I might think about adding another fishfinder with the screen near the console and transom mount the transducer. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 You can purchase a thru hull transducer with an external temp probe so you can read the temp at the console, if you don't mind spending another $50-$60. I ordered one from Lowrance. I was told after the fact that Lowrance would give you an allowance for the transducer that came with the unit if you want to replace with a transducer with an external temp probe. If your unit is a Lowrance here is a link. www.lei-extras.com Good luck...................Al Quote

It is a Lowrance X47 and I am thinking of switching this with the Eagle Fishmark 480 I have at the trolling motor (they use the same transducer). Switching out the transducer could be some labor on my part as well though. Haven't looked at that part of the boat yet to see what it would entail. Either way, adding a transom mounted fishfinder/transducer would solve the problem and give the back fisherman a better view of what's going on. The current console one is a bit small to see. Quote
