Whopper Plopper 90

I got the Whopper Plopper size 90 as a gift. I was told where it came from. Should I exchange it for a 130? I usually fish largemouth in ponds. What's your experience with these sizes?

I like my 90 and I like my 130. At my pond I personally get more bites on my 130, and on public waters I almost always get more bites on my 90. With that being said I'm only buying 110s from now on as I get the size profile more like a 90 and the plop of a 130. Best of Both worlds

     Here's my two cents on the subject. It would depend on the size of the fish your targeting. Pricing is slightly higher so you might have to pay some additional bucks or two I believe for the 130 WP. I am not a fan of the 90's. I have throw them both and the 90 if it gets a little piece of grass or something fouled on the blade it will spin the lure on the retrieve or if your try to burn it back after your out of the strike zone it has a tendency to spin. This will give your line problems with the excessive twists.  You might look at the 110 size. I feel it is a good in between size.

I did not realize there was a 110. Thanks. And I see there is a $ difference. I'll swap for that one or just buy another. I LOVE topwaters and I can't wait to use this thing.

There were some design improvements done to the 110 to improve running and from fowling.  My 90 sucks and i like my 110 a lot.  I also have to hold my rod high to keep the 90 from going under and the 110 does not have that issue...

I love my 90. I haven’t fished the other two sizes. I fish it slow or at times kinda how you would fish a popper. Both large and smallmouth have eaten it up. Haven’t caught any huge fish but it has done well for me. 

 

I fish it on 30lb spiderwire. I haven’t had a problem with the line twist. The lake I fish has little veg so as far as the grass fouling it I haven’t experienced that either. I believe it fills a niche that other baits can’t, so I wouldnt just trade it in either. You got a free one maybe pop for another and try them heads up?

I’ve caught fish on the 90, never the 130. 

I want to get and try a 110. 

Caught several on the 90 but no big fish.

Smallmouth Bass and Pickerel love the WP 90 That's all I seem to catch on mine and I am not complaining.

I have the 90, 110, and 130 sizes in my tackle bag. Here's my take on each of the sizes:

 

WP90 Cons: It fouls extremely easy with even the smallest amount of weeds or debris. Fouling can occur when the hook snags a small weed or the weed wraps and gets stuck between the lure sections.

 

WP90 Pros: Enters the water a lot quieter than the 110 or 130 and is less likely to spook a fish (and thus less likely to get an initial reaction bite). Works well when I'm throwing to a specific target rather than casting beyond my target area. Sometimes this is a benefit when I'm bank fishing.

 

WP110 Cons: Still susceptible to fouling if weed gets caught on hook or wraps around body. Again, it doesn't take much to foul this thing up. It hits the water fairly heavy and many times on that brief submerge it picks up weeds. You need to let it get back to the surface before you begin your retrieve. When you long bomb a cast out there even with the rod tip up the WP110 tends to submerge for a bit. Intermediate to shorter casts work best. I've found it best to cast well beyond my target area with the WP110.

 

WP110 Pros: It catches lots of fish. By far the most productive size that I have used. I've caught bass between 1lb and 6lb on this size.

 

WP130 Cons: Check your knots and your line frequently when using the 130. I've had two of them go flying off into the sunset. Hits the water pretty hard which can be detrimental if fish are skittish. It's definitely of the size that you want to make sure that both your line and your pole can handle the weight.

 

WP130 Pros: You can cast this thing a mile which can be a great benefit when shore fishing, especially when vegetation prevents you from accessing all of the shoreline. Engages topwater action much quicker than the 90 or the 110 which is great when you cast far. Had a ton of strikes doing a stop and pop after the initial landing. Not as susceptible to fouling weeds or topwater debris. While it does produce fish, I've caught more on both the 110 and 90, but that may be because of where I fish.

 

Where I fish in SC many of the smaller lagoons have a lot of stringy weeds on and just below the surface and this makes it frustrating to fish the Whopper Plopper, but these smaller lagoons have been more productive for me than the larger ones.

 

So if you have ponds relatively free of floating crud the WP90 will work just fine. But I'd say the best overall size, even though it is susceptible to fouling in certain conditions, is the WP110.

I'd say go for the 110 to start. If I had to choose between the 90 and 130 I'd go 130 all day.

I have all 4 sizes, I don't think it hurts to have one of each the 90 is the one I have the most of by far though.

I have 90, 110 and 130. I like 110 a lot but 90 should work well in small pond too.

I'm fishing a few of the 90's for river smallies. I don't have any complaints with the bait at all. I might pick up a 130 to have but not so much for the smallies but I've been nailing a few muskies each year the last few.

 

I jumped on the Whopper Plopper band wagon because of the positive reviews here. It's a good topwater. But my favorite??????
