Surprisingly, I didn't hear any reports of anyone getting killed out there this year. I may have fished there 15 weekends at most this year. Spent a number of weekends fishing lakes in S.E. Wisconsin that I have never fished, as well as my local panfish haunts, to get away from the madness of the Chain. Plan on doing more of that next year.

Wow...that's scary.  That kid is crazy lucky the crash didn't result in some life changing injuries.

d**n idiot!  That video is a compelling reason to have licensing and age limits for those things.  But no matter how many rules and regs there are there will always be this kind of kid doing this.

Age doesn't necessarily negate stupid. That being said, passing some kind of course for anyone who operates a boat or PWC on public waterways is not a bad idea. We have to pass a course to operate a motor vehicle and here in IL if you are born after 1990, you have to pass a test to hunt legally.

What kills me is there was no one else out on the lake as far as we could see. Maybe if the lake commonly had boat traffic, the kid would have been more aware of what was going on.

My home water is the busiest inland waterway per acre in the United States. I'm overly cautious.  As @3dees mentioned, he won't even fish the Chain, as its commonly known around here. As a weekend boat operator on the Chain, I need to know what's going on all around me 100% of the time, ALWAYS. No breaks from the action, especially after 10am. Even at 6am the fishermen share the water with the wake boarders and water skiers, because they too don't want to be on the water when the crazies and drunks come out.

That video boils my blood. Having had a few interactions with jet skiers over the years that I had a jon boat I know how aggravating they can be but to drive directly into the sun when visibility is hampered is pure stupidity. Where are this kid's parents? My parents would never let me near a jet ski at 13. When I got my learner's permit to drive my old man reminded me every day that I was driving a 3 ton machine that could kill someone if I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. I guess because its on the water people think its much safer. What harm could it do? Well I guess that kid found out.

Our lakes are a mess on the weekends from Memorial Day to past Labor Day.  People just don't have a clue.  Buy a boat, hit the water, no instruction needed, right?  You need to have eyes in the back of your head and your head on a swivel at all times.  If it's not the jetskis it's the wake boats throwing up big rollers right next to you.  Almost went overboard a few times this year because of them.

 

One of the lakes north of here (Columbus) is split into four sections by roads/bridges.  Two southern sections are run what ya brung.  The northern two are idle only/no wake.  You can fish in peace in the northern sections but they aren't necessarily the best.

North Carolina has a law now that everyone who operates a boat or jetski must pass a operating safety course and must be 16 or older.  Old guys like me were grandfathered in.  Only problem, there are not nearly enough wild life officers to enforce the law.  Kinda like our highways.  Ever notice the idiots that you deal with every time on the road.  Not all, but most are also licensed.

Missouri has a boat operators law that states anyone born after 1983 has to pass a boaters education class before they are able to operate a motorized boat.  Also, to operate a boat alone a person has to be 14 years old unless accompanied by an adult.  I'm not sure why that age isn't 16 since why is it OK to be able to operate a boat if you aren't old enough to operate a car.  Not that being old = being smart.  It's pretty amazing reading the water patrol reports during the summer time and seeing how many boat collisions there are that involve PWCs.  People are just dumb sometimes.

 

I'm wondering what the outcome of this accident was.  Lawsuit against the owner of the PWC?

Luckily I don't have to deal with jet skiers but those wake boat and water skier almost got me a few times,

another reason I don't fish at main lake as often.

Holy cow.  That raw!  I've never come very close to a collision like that on the water but those jet skis and other recreational watercrafts cruising around and making waves are just annoying AF sometimes.

I have witnessed a pontoon boat hit a bridge, a jet ski hit a larger boat, and a bow rider and a cruiser ramming into each other because the drivers were drunk and though it was funny... I was just ticked because they ran over my line.

Boating under the influence in Colorado will potentially get you jail time and fines, and a mandatory 3 month boating suspension.  Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife:

The drunk guys playing bumper boats happened right here in Massachusetts and the laws here are similar. I probably should have reported those guys but honestly at the time I was just glad they didn't hit the pier I was on, which was a real possibility and a bit annoyed they ran over my line. At least it didn't get stuck and take my rod with it.
