Just wondering if anyone has thrown the Rapala bx waking minnow? What time of year and conditions would you throw it in? Wonder if it's applicable to my fishing here

thanks

Haven't used the Rapala but I like wake baits any time the bass are holding really shallow and not really hitting a spinnerbait or topwater very well, gives them a little different look. Really calm mornings/days can be a good time for them also.

This past late spring we had a lot of flooding after heavy rains.  I took my kayak out to a place that usually has a ton of surface weeds but due to the flooding the weed tops were about a foot under water.  I had crazy success with wake baits that day.

Yes, I bought two whenever they came out a few years back. Seeing as you're in New Mexico and I'm in PA, we're probably going to be using them at different times of the year.

When the aggressive topwater bite is on nothing will produce more fish than a walk the dog presentation.

The BX waking minnow seems to work best for me when bass are hitting top water but not aggressively. I've found a lot of success on them around grass beds and weeds. They are that perfect in between for me between a walk the dog and a popper. I've also caught more fish on the BX minnow when working it slow. I think it looks more natural like wounded bait fish struggling to swim.

Cool thanks guys. I don't have much veg to fish here, but catch a lot of fish off rocks and rock walls. I think I can find a time and place to throw one.

I caught my PB LMB (my avatar) off a Manns Baby One-Minus waking it from the bank during the post spawn. Just keep the rod tip high and reel slowly with occasionally burn then pause (repeat). With that said, I fish them in areas and times (spring and fall exclusively) when I'm fishing a square bill. I'll search the shallows with the square bill in the day then switch to a wake bait at dusk when I see surface activity.

I am confused about these as well.  When would you use it vs walk the dog type of lures?  They seem to work around stick ups.

If you got a rod / reel / line combo that can throw a 1.8 oz bait /7 " size or a 3 oz bait / 9" size treble hook bait you might want to check a MS Slammer which might be the king of wake baits. Lots of large fish have been caught on this bait through out the country. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjeoomS-pPYAhXD54MKHQqvABcQjBAILjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fswimbaitcity.com%2Fhtml%2Fstore.htm&usg=AOvVaw3Cf-aeqJAIDhcoThmbxoPb

@Primusthat would be a small splash to break into the wake/swimbait game!!! I like the idea of throwing them, how do you think they would would in a highland clear water impoundment with smallmouth and largemouth?

I've never fished a highland impoundment, that said if you go to any of the Swimbait forums you will see that Slammers are consistently catching them everywhere guys fish for Bass and are one of the most revered big baits . I fish a lot of clear natural lakes in Michigan, most of them have weed cover and they get slammed. Fish it with a slow steady wake, you can twitch it or crank it down or a combination of all 3 . It's also a terrific option when fishing at night. If you are tempted to try big baits this would be a great one to start out with .

Here is a nice write-up ...

I would say absolutely no arguing with the success of the MS Slammer. This is on the top of my list for baits to buy. My question would be: how many wake type baits does one need (or should have)? I have a spro rat that can be fished slow or a good wake, even down 6" to a foot. On my list is also a g2 shellcracker and the ms slammer. THere are a lot of great baits in this category. Is an ms slammer that much of an improvement over a 50 bbz rat?

I guess the real question is how do we narrow it down and avoid the bait monkey telling us to buy one of everything?

The largest spotted bass I ever caught , about 4 lbs was fooled by a large size Pico Pop in deep standing timber at Table Rock Lake . I was reeling it slow and steady . It was shimmying and pushing a big old bulge out  in front . Not a wake bait  but it was creating a nice wake .
