IndianaFinesse Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Quick question, what do you guys think of putting one ewg style treble hook on the front of a crankbait and a round bend on the back? Would you get some of the best of the holding power of ewgs but also hook most of the fish that slap at your bait with the round bend, or would it be the worst of both worlds? 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 That is exactly what I do with a lot of my crankbaits. I always feel like if they get the front hook, then they're eating it well and I want the holding ability of the EWG. If they're nipping at the tail, I want the hooking ability of the round bend. No idea if it works like it does in my head, but I've talked myself into believing it so that's what I do. 1 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted December 13, 2017 Super User Posted December 13, 2017 It makes sense in theory. Give it a shot. 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 13, 2017 Super User Posted December 13, 2017 I've done it with large Spoonplugs, but pretty much always avoided it with most every other crankbait. I could possibly see it working well with Traps. Theory and reality sometimes don't mesh. Try it and let me know how many you miss/lose 1 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 13, 2017 Super User Posted December 13, 2017 All my crankbaits have Excalibur Tx3 Rotating Treble Hooks front & back. 1 1 Quote
Bent Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I saw a video (can't remember which one) where Brent Ehrler recommended the opposite - EWG in back and round bend in the front. He said that with round bends he lost too many fish that had the back treble only. Not saying he's right or wrong, just food for thought. 1 Quote

Those things are wicked!!!! That would be the solution if you could still get them. They hooked as well as a round bend and hold as good as, if not better than, an EWG style. 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 13, 2017 Super User Posted December 13, 2017 There's a reason you can only find them on Ebay these days lol 1 Quote

Super User burrows Posted December 15, 2017 Super User Posted December 15, 2017 All this talk about trebles I was thinking what if they made some circle hook trebles I wonder if that would work? I like using a circle hook for wacky rigging and they never get off I wonder if a circle treble hook design would be as effective? 1 Quote
