render33 Posted December 10, 2017 Posted December 10, 2017 So I'm looking to upgrade my 1232 jon to something a little more stable. Have had my eye on a 1448 jon. Wanted to put a basic deck on it and add some seats, nothing to crazy. My question is would the 45 pound bow trolling motor and the 55 pound transom motor from the 1232 be enough to push the 1448 with a deck? With people, gear and deck most likely in the 500 pound range. Any input is much appreciated! Quote
Super User Gundog Posted December 10, 2017 Super User Posted December 10, 2017 The 55# will be fine if you are fishing small lakes. But if you are gonna be fishing larger lakes you might want to invest in a good, used outboard. The 45# on the front should be fine as well but realize you won't be breaking any speed records with it. Just remember to bring enough batteries to run those TMs for as long as you are gonna be on the water. Quote

Agree with an outboard as Gundog mentioned depending on your situation. But. I just got a 16 ft jon boat with a 40 hp and I'm gona run the 55lber on it and it will be plenty! Quote

I get about 5mph just me on max thrust. I would keep the other boat and get a mounting bracket and switch out the bow mount as you go. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 4, 2018 Super User Posted January 4, 2018 I have a 1652 Alweld that has welded in front deck, floor, sides, tunnel hull, & 40 hp Tohatsu. Very heavy boat & it's pushed with a 55# Riptide. 1 Quote
tander Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I have got a 55# Edge on my 17ft boat with a 90hp. It does what I want it to do. I wanted a 12 volt trolling motor because I didn't want to add another battery. If it ever goes out, I still will go with the 55# tm. Quote
BassNJake Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I guess I'm the overkill guy. I've got a 101 minn kota on a 16 foot Crestliner. I've never once wished I had a smaller trolling motor. 1 Quote
haggard Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I got a 1448 Tracker Grizzy jon a couple months ago and I'm in the process of building it out. Basically a duck boat but will use it for bass fishing. I liked that it already has a casting deck, no mods needed. Haven't had it on the water yet but plan to add a trolling motor, been looking at the Minn Kota Edge 45. From everything I've read it looks like that will do the job just fine. Would like to avoid anything larger than the 55 because I think they require a second battery (to get to 24 V) and I'm trying to keep things small and simple and lighter weight and standardize on 12 V. I think the 45 at the bow would be just fine as a troller for your 1448. As for the stern unit, it might work but if you can afford it I'd consider a 15 hp gas motor. It'll get you across the water a little faster (may not be an issue, depending on the size of your most frequently fished water) and will provide an alternate source of power if the bow motor drains the batteries down. Or at least just try out the 45/55 combo since you already have the 55, and see if it works; you can always upgrade later. Quote
