Super User Catt Posted December 4, 2017 Super User Posted December 4, 2017 My grandson is determined he wants a kayak, any decent ones for around $100? Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 For that amount of money, the most realistic option is used - check craigslist in your local market. You could find a cheap one from a big box store, but how the kayak is to be used may render those options as not very viable. If it's for fishing, you may need to bump your budget expectations a bit more. 1 Quote
bholtzinger14 Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Maybe a kids butt and back is different than mine, but a raised seat makes all the difference in the world to me. I would try to get one with a raised seat and it will last him a long time. Used pescdador pros come up here for about $500 and that is the cheapest I would go for myself. That being said a lot of kids are happy as can be with any kayak. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted December 4, 2017 Super User Posted December 4, 2017 A great beginner non-fishing kayak is the Pelican Trailblazer. $199 not on sale, I have seen it as low as $150 during the offseason which is now. Plenty of YouTube vids on how to install rod holders on it when you want to mod it for fishing. 2 Quote
Turtle135 Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 I do not think you will find a "new" kayak for $ 100.00 with enough stability for fishing. Kayaks down in that price range are more like water toys where the angler would spend as much time in the water as seated in the kayak. NYWayfarer's suggestion is probably as close as you could find to that price point. Here is a video addressing purchasing the basic fishing kayak. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 4, 2017 Super User Posted December 4, 2017 I second the craigslist suggestion, as that's probably the most likely place to find a bargain in that price range. One of my sons uses my old 10' Pelican fishing yak, and it works great for him. We picked it up for, I think, $199 at BJs Wholesale Club...Not sure if that was the price, but it was in that range, or maybe it was $350...can't remember! It was/is a fine starter yak for the sport. 1 Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 One more item as it relates to Craigslist - this is the perfect time of the year to snag a deal on a kayak from someone who did the same thing you are trying to do. They bought one for themselves or a family member that wanted to try it out, but now it's the end of the year, they didn't use it or didn't like it, and the kayak is just taking up space in the garage or shed. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 4, 2017 Author Super User Posted December 4, 2017 Merci Beaucoup Y'all? Anyone got experience with Pelican's Vortex DLX80? Dick's Sporting Goods has one for $159.99 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 4, 2017 Super User Posted December 4, 2017 I haven't owned one, but I have looked at the two-piece molded kayaks at Dicks in the past. Crazy thin. Go check one out in person, if you have Dicks close by. Probably very light, but I'd be concerned about the seems, as well as rocks and ramps. Not speaking from experience, however; so maybe they hold up real well. 1 Quote
Onvacation Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 I think the thing to keep in mind is that young kids in particular, are pretty much going to be able to adapt to anything you put them in. We picked up some cheap Sam's Club bare bones one for my 6 year old, and you would think he is in a tricked out PA14. Craigslist is awesome if you keep your eye out for bargains. One nice thing about a cheap kayak though is that you can still add good accessories, such as gear track and rod holders, and then take them off and toss them on a new yak if he decides he likes the sport. To me, it's kind of cool going bare bones and getting back to the roots of the sport and making it work. Long term, as the kids evolve, they seem to have a bit more appreciation for the next yak in line. 1 Quote
JeepFisher Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Check out Lifetime Tamarack Angler kayak at walmart. Currently around 200, but i have seen them get as low as 130. I own it and love it for the price. Stable, tracks well, and easy to transport. 1 Quote
