Super User Sam Posted December 1, 2017 Super User Posted December 1, 2017 We all love our school's bands. When you go to a college away or bowl game, it is best to stay in the hotel with the band. Band people are lots of fun and they know how to have a good time. At least the LSU band knows how to have a good time but they are from Louisiana where everyone has a good time. Here is an interesting video taken during the pre-game opening ceremonies in Tiger Stadium which gives you a totally different perspective of what the band does on the field. It is long so you may not want to watch the entire video. But it is very interesting to see and hear what the band sees and hears while on the field. Check out the cheerleaders at the end who get out of the way when the team enters the stadium. Just thought I would post something totally out of the ordinary!!!! Enjoy. http://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/entertainment_life/music/article_089be68a-d473-11e7-b2b6-9bfdac23bcc2.html 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 1, 2017 Super User Posted December 1, 2017 I despise marching and drum line. I played in our wind ensemble and jazz ensemble, and also in a small quartet with our conductor. He once played double bass for Ellington. Him on bass, his daughter on piano, me on drums, and his son on trombone, or sometimes just a trio. Our wind ensemble was a traveling competition level group. In 1989, we won best in division, best overall wind ensemble, and best overall in a New England Invitational in Boston. Our signature piece was Owen Ried's LaFiesta Mexicana and Copeland's Lincoln Portrait. There were 128 bands there. My high school had around 500 kids enrolled. If you wanted to be in band, you just had to show up for lessons. Gerry was a hell of a conductor, teacher and friend. I still play to this day. 2 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted December 1, 2017 Super User Posted December 1, 2017 I wasn't ever in band but my brother started in jr high and is now a professional tuba player. Just like an athlete would be, he was recruited in HS and had multiple full ride offers. Pretty crazy. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted December 1, 2017 Super User Posted December 1, 2017 I did not. Rather difficult to march with a piano. 2 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 2, 2017 Super User Posted December 2, 2017 Not a band, but a singing group... Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 2, 2017 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 2, 2017 Oh wow did that bring back memories! I played trumpet for 12 or so years - from 5th grade through college. Performed many a half-time show, even for the Seahawks a few times. I was in a AA high school, where being in a music program was "cool". Half the school was enrolled in a some type of music class. You could even letter in it. I was in all the different bands by the time I graduated - concert, orchestra, pep, two jazz ensembles, and marching. I was playing 6-9 hrs a day. My high school band teacher was a terrific mentor and friend. He really cared about his students. To this day, I'm still in contact with him. Good times! 5 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 2, 2017 Super User Posted December 2, 2017 Yes. Five years of trumpet. I don't recall it being fun and I refused to wear a white shirt and thin black tie with slacks. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted December 3, 2017 Super User Posted December 3, 2017 Pretty cool topic. I was an athlete in school and thought band/music was for the "nerds". I will admit, I was pretty much an idiot and thought I was cool and those people were dorks. Fast forward 20 years and my son is in the 6th grade. He despises sports and the attitude that the jocks have. He is in choir (and really good) and is in speech and drama. He absolutely loves it and I couldn't be happier for him. He is getting a guitar and keyboard for Christmas because he wants to learn to play. I am going to enroll him in lessons and support him in any way I can. 6 Quote
CroakHunter Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 I wasnt. I'm not musically gifted in any way. But always loved the pep band playing at our schools basketball games. Especially when they played "great balls of fire!" that always got the student section pumped up. 1 Quote
jbmaine Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 I played trombone in our HS marching band. We must have been pretty good because every 4 yrs we were invited to the cherry blossom festival in D.C., and once every fall we were invited to Boston to play the halftime show at a Pats game. I remember one game the pats were playing the jets, and as we were finishing the jets were coming back on the field. Joe Namath ran past us and smiled at one of the majorettes and the poor girl fainted right on the spot on national television. Jim Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 5, 2017 Super User Posted December 5, 2017 I wasn’t, but I hung around with a bunch of guys that had a garage band. Made quite a few memories. Quote
Chris_97TJ Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 I always tell people I was in a band in school, but then my wife corrects me and says I was in “the” band. I played Tuba starting in the 6th grade and throughout my school career. Loved marching season, loved concert season. I was pretty decent, made the all state band a couple years in HS. My son is now in the 8th grade and is in his third year of playing...the Tuba. 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 6, 2017 Super User Posted December 6, 2017 The closest I came was taking clarinet in 6th grade. I couldnt get anything to come out of it but squawks and squeeks. I was 0 % interested in it . One day the teacher called on me to play an E note. I had no idea , so I went "eeeee" with the clarinet to my lips. For some reason , I only went for it one simester. I did end up learning to play a real instrument. 5 string Banjo !? 1 Quote
RMax Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 Freshman and sophomore year, then I switched to another interesting program. I go to school for half a day at my local zoo instead of going to regular school. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 6, 2017 Super User Posted December 6, 2017 One time, at band camp… 2 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted December 6, 2017 Super User Posted December 6, 2017 I've also taught my son that he doesn't have to let anyone bully him or make fun of him for being in choir or music. I have told him that if it gets to the point where it bothers him, punch them in the nose and don't stop until they give up. I know there are times in my life where someone should have punched me in the nose until I gave up. Quote
