Super User J._Bricker Posted November 30, 2017 Super User Posted November 30, 2017 Congrats on your son being stationed at M.C.R.D. and his new assignment. Unfortunately, I’ve never fished in that part of California, but I’m sure light line and the drop shot might come into play. I suggest posting your question in the Western Bass Fishing section and I’m sure the So Cal guys will be able to help. Good luck and good fishing, JB 1 Quote

BASS302 Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 @crypt, I go to San Diego to fish once per year. I have only been to Miramar once, so I don't have any advice about fishing there. However, he should check out the San Diego fishing website sdfish.com. He can signup for a logon id and then check the freshwater reports section. If he doesn't have a boat, he might want to check out Santee Lakes (basically big ponds). 1 Quote

Caliyak Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 Crypt, thank your son for his commitment and service. you must be a proud father. Thank you. Here is what I found for you: https://www.tripsavvy.com/san-diego-county-lakes-for-fishing-2937307 https://sdfish.com/freshwater-fishing/ Also, he can drive up to Orange county and hit up the LA reservoirs like Diamond. But, if he can fish the big blue with his bass fishing gear. He is not limited because of his gear. Plenty of nice fish he can catch. lastly, welcome to California 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 1, 2017 Super User Posted December 1, 2017 Here more info on Lake Miramar from SD Fishing. https://sdfish.com/lakes/lake-miramar/ This seem to be a very good small lake for fishing with boat and kayak to rent. It is about 1 hr drive from me too bad I never fish there. Maybe @MTPandawould know. If your son wanna drive and fish in Canyon Lake let me know. 1 Quote
BASS302 Posted December 2, 2017 Posted December 2, 2017 @JustJames, Good point about MTPanda. I'm pretty sure @MTPanda has an account on sdfish (or someone's using his photo). 1 Quote

I don't know much about Miramar except for that the water has been really low so there the private boat launch ramp is closed so not many people have been fishing it that I know of. There are better lakes in the SD area such as El Capitan, which has usually treated me pretty well each time I've been, Lower Otay, and San V but San V is pretty tough. Murray is ok and is a tough little lake to figure out. I've yet to hit up Murray but hear reports from locals here and there. 10 hours ago, JustJames said: Here more info on Lake Miramar from SD Fishing. https://sdfish.com/lakes/lake-miramar/ This seem to be a very good small lake for fishing with boat and kayak to rent. One of these days you gotta come down so we can hit up El Capitan, San V or Otay. Or Barrett next year when it reopens! 5 hours ago, BASS302 said: @JustJames, Good point about MTPanda. If you can get here in May you can possibly fish Lake Barrett when it reopens. Definitely a fun time with up to 100 bass in a full day. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 2, 2017 Super User Posted December 2, 2017 Just noticed this thread. No reason to venture out of the San Diego area to bass fish. Dixon, El Capitan, Hodges ( closed until Feb.), Jennings, Lower Otay, Miramar, Morena, Murry, Poway, San Vicenre , Sutherland (closed until Mar) and Wolford lakes. Miramar is extremely clear water and the bass fishing during cold water period is tough. If the lake is low then the tulies are out of water, most of the catchable bass will be near the dam and that's off limits. I would use a slip shot rigged 6" Roboworm in MM111, with 5 to 6 lb mono on spinning tackle. The are some giant bass in Miramar so a 8" ROF 5 dark trout Hudd swimbait would be a possibility if your son has the right tackle. Wolhford is a good cold water lake and fishable from shore and also has some giant bass. Slip shot rig using 8 to 10 lb mono, spinning or baitcasting with larger worms like Uptons Cutoms 9" Dragon tail in DV craw would be a good choice. San V the bass go deep so you need boat or rent a boat, all the SoCal finesse presentations work at this lake. Tom 2 Quote
