Hey I’m workin on finding stuff for Christmas and I think I got pretty narrowed down. I’m using this for pretty much everything underwater except really light stuff like dropshots or unweighted plastics.  I’m getting this because my lews Mach 1 doesn’t really have much sensitivity imo for jigs and I have to tie on a leader every time. I watched videos for combos for under $200 and came up with the shimano exage and shimano casitas. I did some more research and I found that I should get the citica reel because it’s aluminim and not much more. On amazon I found the citica for $106, so it’s only less than $10 more that the casitas. I also read that the casitas cast lighter stuff better, is that true? Also is the citica’s brake on inside, and what exactly is the difference between the ihg and i

Thanks for the help

A couple things I will tell you from fishing in the $200 combo range. Don’t be afraid to buy used gear, some of the best deals can be found used.

Alright thanks. I’ve heard a lot about the Fury and never heard of the Tatula CT but I’ll definitely look into both of them. I considered used gear but I’m on the fence about it, what’s the chance that I’ll get something used that’s worse than if I bought a lower model new?

An awful of of information on here about the Tatula CT.  Probably the best reel you can buy in its price range.

I have bought quite a few used reels.  One had to be repaired before I could use it.  One the drag was sticky on so needed a cleaning.  One had a bent pin making it very hard to get the side cover off.  I actually sent it to Mike at DVT because I couldn't get it off and didn't want to damage the reel.  One had a plastic thumb release that was broke on one side when it arrived.  Broken piece (very small) was still in box so I assume it broke during shipping.  $5 to get a new part.  One a spring came off the 3rd time out causing it to lock up.  More than $5 to repair.  This is out of about 43 reels purchased used.  Several looked like new.

I looked at the tatula ct online a little. It seems like it’s very similar to the citica. I’ll go to the store and look at both

Never used a Citica, but I have a few Shimanos.  All but one you adjust the brakes by removing the side cover.  They are centrifugal brakes.  The Tatula has magnetic brakes and they are adjusted using a dial on the outside of the cover.

For the rod if you are looking at a Dobyns Fury, ALF has them 20% off or 87.99 for a 734c.  A great choice for the real would be Tatula sv tws, on ebay these can be purchased for 119.99.  Combo would be $208 which is a pretty good deal on this right now.

Tatula brakes are magnetic but also function somewhat like centrifugal brakes.  The magnets come on as speed increases.  I think it's a great system and prefer it to other style brakes.  I would take centrifugal over standard magnetic brakes though.

Different strokes for different folks is what makes the world go round.  Maybe it is because I learned on one of the original Fuegos, but I prefer magnetic.  I do love the Shimano DC, tho.  Magforce 3D is a close second.

Ebay is you friend. Daiwa Tatula Ct for $90, Fuego CT for $65, Abu Garcia Revo SX for $80. Then pick up an IRod Fiber rod MHF and you will be all gravy. And you saved some money for line or lures.

Their combo recommendations were based off TW prices (MSRP, especially Shimanos which you’ll rarely see listed for less than MSRP) during the Black Friday sale. They put out informative videos but like some people have already pointed out, you can probably find better combos if you’re willing to research online or go used.

I agree with a lot a lot of people on here about the Daiwa Tatula line and the great value that they can be found for on eBay. The CT should serve you well for your intended purposes and at less that ~$90, you’ll have more than half of your budget left over for a rod.

As far as going the used route, I purchased a majority of my gear in the used market. Luckily, most of my experiences have been positive. Just put in your time, ask questions (legit sellers should be willing to answer any/every question you might have about an item), and use PayPal.

Good luck on your search.

Went to field and stream yesterday. They didn’t have a citica but they had a curado, which I understand is very similar. I ended up deciding to get a citica and the exage rod. The citicas msrp is 150 and I found it on amazon for 106.

I’ll probably put fluorocarbon on this, I read it’s not as good as braid for a baitcaster but I think not tying on leaders every time will outweigh the negatives. Worst case I don’t like the flouro and Ill get braid.

If you shop Ebay and buy only from sellers who have high volume, reasonable return policies, and over 99% approval rating you will not get scammed with bad used products.  Read the descriptions carefully.

So I decided on the citica.

I’m thinking the 7’2” medium fast exage. Any opinions? Looking to use it for pretty much everything underwater except really light stuff

edit

Thinking a 7 2 mh f exage now
