I’m looking at a new spinning rod and I’ve narrowed it down to two.  I’ll be using it mainly for plastics (but also some top water and jerkbaits).  It’s between 7’1 MF and 6’8 MXF (both rods have the same line and lure weight).  I like the idea of the shorter rod (for more accurate casting) and it’s a little lighter, but the 7’1 is recommended for plastics.  Would the 6’8 not be a good plastics rod too?  Any one handle both and have a preference?

Ignore what the rod manufacturer tells you to use the rod for, it’s a suggestion. That 6’8”m is about the most versatile rod you will use and is perfect for plastics. I prefer shorter rods.

I have a 6'8" MXF in the Avid X line -- it is just about the perfect rod for weightless and lightly weighted plastics, and is excellent for double duty with topwater and jerkbaits, shakyheads, tubes & grubs...hugely versatile.

I have the 6' 8", one of the most versatile spinning rods I've ever owned. I've held the 7' 1", it's way stiffer than I like a spinning rod to be. If I needed anything like that, I'd use a casting rod.

Noooo.... don't say that, the 68MXF was out of stock during the St Croix cyber Monday sale, so I ordered the 71MF instead...... I figured it would be more moderately tapered than the 6-8?

One of my friends uses the 7' 1" for shakyheads and really likes it. Just my preference, I wouldn't want anything that stout.

Pulled the trigger on the 6’8 MXF rod (2018 model…I like the new reel seat), and I’m pretty stoked.  I did notice that the new models only carry a 15 year warranty where the older models carry a lifetime (limited) warranty.  15 years is a long time, but there is some piece-of-mind about a lifetime warranty.  Wonder why the shortened the warranty?
