Ben Miller Posted November 28, 2017 Posted November 28, 2017 Hey Guys, So I'm getting serious about bass fishing this year. Got a new boat, new fish finder, a bunch of new rods & tackle, and been reading a tremendous amount. Last year before I get real serious, I started throwing Alabama rigs and lost a few. I've replaced them, and about to start throwing even more expensive tackle. So far, the heaviest line I use is 30lb braid. Probably going to get into using 50-65lb braid with a leader too. So my question is what reel has the power to pull a snagged lure out from being hung up? I'm thinking I need a set up just to get my snagged lures kinda like the one in the picture. Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated! Thank you! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 28, 2017 Super User Posted November 28, 2017 I use the para cord that came on my plug retriever. It's not worth the cost of a reel, rod, and line when the retriever is around $10. 2 Quote
Ben Miller Posted November 28, 2017 Author Posted November 28, 2017 Hey J Francho, That's awesome! Have you used it and does it work? I guess the only thing I'm worried about is getting the lure retriever hung and loosing it too? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 28, 2017 Super User Posted November 28, 2017 That's the exact one I have. I've had 100% success with it. It's at least a decade old. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 29, 2017 Global Moderator Posted November 29, 2017 I have one of these, Not only does it save nearly 100% of my baits that get stuck, but I use it to recover dozens of baits that others have lost every year. 1 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted November 29, 2017 Super User Posted November 29, 2017 I just use a baitcasting reel without the rod . All it does is store the string . Any reel would work . 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted November 29, 2017 Super User Posted November 29, 2017 Just tie on 30' of 1/8 dia Nylon cord to the lure knocker, nothing to break and simply wind it around your hand with a couple of half hitches to store it. I have done this for over 40 years. Tom 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted November 30, 2017 Super User Posted November 30, 2017 I use to have my lure knocker on a marker buoy but there were a lot of times I needed that buoy for marking and then I didnt have a lure knocker available . 1 Quote

rangerjockey Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 First, there's no need for a leader with a A rig. A couple things you can do ... First when it gets hung up get on top of it or past it with the trolling motor and pull it back from the direction it was coming from. I always use a head with a light enough wire hook that I can straighten if all else fails. I use the retriever with the chains also, they work really well. 1 Quote
