Just a heads, I just received a new 2017 bass fishing book from Jose Alwine, Lunker Lore, that should be added to your library of bass books. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving with your family.

Finished reading this new book and learned a few things about What happened with Gary Scharwz and Jalisco lake he created to grow giant bass. Scharwz 1st was Purla that Bassmaster wrote an article on featuring flash water prawns as a food source.

Jalisco was turned over to Texas Share a Lunker program as a genetic test lake to run for several years without any fishing. So this answer why we haven't read about any giant bass from Jalisco. Purla has a population of F1's now providing trophy fishing for the pay to play anglers.

Camelot-Bell, another trophy bass lake appears to be the new hot ticket for giant bass pay to play anglers, interesting.

Good bass book, quick read and informative. I see why I received this book after reading it.

Off topic, Mike Long, I believe still has a blog up and going, he ran into some issues a few years ago, not aware of any books in the works by Mike. I wasn't fully aware of Josh's new book until just before it was published, although we did correspond.

Thanks for the info. I was looking all around trying to find any current reports from Jalisco. Haven't heard any recent stuff about Camelot either.

I'm the author of Lunker Lore.  The big fish out of Jalisco is over 7lbs.  Those fish are only 3 years old though.  In then next 1-2 years it'll be producing DD's.  Camelot bell has gone through some major changes.  The owner created a new lake.  In 2016 he moved 75 DD bass from Bell to the new lake which he calls the "wolf pack lake."  It's roughly 60 acres.  The biggest fish moved was just north of 16lbs. That fish could push 18+ now.  He also stocked a few giant males as well and the offspring from the first spawn 1.5 years ago are topping 4lbs now.

Lots of exciting stuff in the world of private water going on.  Obviously catching private water fish is much easier and I think there should be separate records, but it'll still be neat to see what some of these guys are ultimately able to produce on the top end range.  It's been a while since we've seen a rash of some truly giant fish.  Public or private, the world is due!

I agree that it is interesting. My worry is are we headed the same way hunting is quickly going? Elk and deer hunting here in the west is getting more and more competitive every year. Outfitters commonly have people following animals year around and highest paying client gets first crack. And young hunters now measure success by the size of an animal and not that they were successful.

I hope fishing doesnt take this turn it doesnt seem likely but when I here pay to play it makes me nervous.

At one time bass size was an indication of a top predator that was cunning enough to avoid capture itself for many seasons and was a prized trophy that spoke to an angler's perseverance and skill.  It appears we are moving away from that notion in bass fishing.  alas...

Josh, welcome to the BR site. I want to thank you for acknowledging me in your book personally.  I don't recall discussing my thoughts on George Perry's world record bass and you covered it in detail, excellent research and let the readers come to their own conclusions.

Congratulations and good lucks it's your book.

Private water fishing is just one aspect of the sport.  Certainly not for everyone, but very interesting in its own right.  Still plenty of giant fish caught on public water and still plenty of great anglers pursuing them on both public and private.  Lunker Lore looks at both, without trying to pass too much judgment on how a man chooses to chase his favorite sport fish.  The world has changed and will continue to change.  I'm just excited to see what's possible with giant largemouth regardless of where it's caught!

My thoughts on private lakes trying to raise giant bass is they have a very low success rate when planting native bass and feeding them for growth. Selective harvest by stocking fingerlings raised by state hatchery from giant bass parents like Share A Lunker program has been doing for decades now hasn't produced FLMB exceeding 18 lbs to date. Where I get concerned is genetic engineering and some of that has happened in the Oklahoma university. It has taken nature eons for bass to evolve and whenever man steps in to change what nature has created it doesn't always turnout as planned.

If or when man raised or GMO giant bass exceed what nature has created I believe a new category of bass should classified.

Good book that covers several topics and every bass angler should add this to their collection.
