Given the 50% off Black Friday sale on the Edge rods, my interest is piqued.  I have an NRX MBR843C that, while a nice rod, doesn't impress me as much as I expected.  I actually preferred the GLX MBR843C I used to have.  So I'm wondering how the Black Widow compares to a comparable NRX.  If I get good feedback, I might buy the Edge and sell the NRX.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Here’s this:

that review indicates they run on the light side of their ratings. I recall similar feedback from early buyers of the First Strike rods on other forums.

The deals look good, even tempting, especcially because I’ve really liked my Kistler rods built on NFC blanks. But it says all over Edge’s site that everything is out of stock and you need to allow 3-5 weeks for delivery. While I have zero experience with Edge and don’t want to bad mouth them I do recall a lot of people who ordered the first round of the First Strike rods having a ton of issues with order fulfillment and some were less then pleased with the final product.

Of of course I have given Kistler a try despite the bad press they’ve received in the past and had no issues with their service or product.

If if you give it a try be sure to let us know how it works out.

Kistler is also running their pick your own discount sale right now. You can get 40% off any instock Zbone stick that’s priced $499. Might be worth considering as well since they’re using NFC blanks.

Regarding Edge rods in general, and the Edge 705-1, I described my experience in the 2nd post of the above linked 2016 thread on Edge rods.

Now, I have both an NRX MBR843C and what was the equivalent Edge Black Widow a couple years ago - the MagBass 705-1.  I prefer the Edge, mainly due to the better balance of that rod (tip light). Sensitivity is subjective but I think the blanks are comparable with perhaps the Edge having the "edge".  The Edge is also spiral wrapped and has the Weibe-type reel seat - both of which are nifty so those are pluses as well (keep in mind that the current Edge rods are not spiral wrapped AFAIK).

I'm not sure the Edge 705-1 (or the current equivalent Edge model) is enough better to warrant selling the NRX 843C to get the Edge, but those $280 prices on the Black Widow rods are certainly temping.

Finally - I would encourage you to read my post in the linked thread about the changing specifications on Edge rods - it was hard for me to find out exactly what I was getting. AND, as I mentioned in the other thread, the Tackle Tour review linked above is no longer valid as the rod that was reviewed is no longer the standard offering.

Thanks for the info.   I pulled the trigger on a Black Widow MBR735-1.  I specified i want the HM blank in the notes and asked for them to call me if there was a problem with that.   Hoping to hear back from them one way or other.   And keeping both the Edge and NRX may be an option once i fish this rod,  likely in the spring,  given the 3-5 week lead time quoted on their website.
