Where should I move to?

Don’t come to Texas. Everybody else already has. 

 

I live near Austin, but not in it. The city/county is not for me, but once you’re away from that county, you’ll find it nice. (Unless you’re in to partying, then Austin is good) I rarely go into Austin. Very crowded and horrendous traffic.

 

if you like variety of fishing spots for big bass, I’m within 5 hour drive in any direction to some great destinations. Amistad, Falcon, Fork, Rayburn, Toledo Bend, etc.

 

17 other Lakes within 2 hours. Any cast can equal a 10 pounder. Anytime of the year.

I've lived in KY my entire life. Although I love it there's no denying we have a tax problem here. We have income tax, property tax AND a 6% sales tax. Most states have either/or but we have them all. We're as heavily taxed as some of the northeastern states. Truthfully I wouldn't choose to move here if I didn't have a pretty good income.

 

Our gun laws are excellent, however.

I’m in a similar boat, living in Taxachusetts. My cousin came back to stay when he retired from the Marines. He stayed long enough to see $400K for a fix-er-upper hous, ended up in South Carolina and loves it there.

I drove through Austin several times when I was stationed in San Antonio, not once did I come through there when there wasn't a traffic jam.

I have never passed anywhere near Atlanta when it wasn’t the same.

One parameter I made for myself as far as choosing where to live involves traffic.  If you are going to move to a populous area or city, make your choice based on weather.  All areas with large populations have horrible traffic problems, it is a responsibility of local governments to correct but rarely seems to be a priority.  If you are going to move to a more rural area, then make your choice based on amenities and lifestyle.  Traffic will not be an issue.

 

For example, I have a sister who lives in a rural part of Texas, an hour plus outside of Austin.  It is a beautiful place and I could see myself moving there.  However, i would have to move THERE, not Austin itself.  Why?  Because Austin has all of the downsides that Southern California has (traffic, overcrowding, crime in certain locales) without the benefit of near perfect weather.  It would make no sense to move from So Cal to Austin just to be closer to what I like, but not actually there and have to put up with the weather issues in addition to the population issues. 

 

As for weather, what works for you is a personal choice.  Really hot weather wipes me out if I have to work in it while my wife doesn't do well in really cold weather, so So Cal, with its lack of extremes, works for us as a couple.

I know how you feel @Elkins45. Here in PA we got all three and its a real drag on our economy. When the company I work for closes our doors I'll be looking to relocate.

Don't forget the highest fuel tax in the US, too. Wouldn't want to leave that out.

Cool map about a quarter of the way down the page.  I have not yet done ANY research into accuracy of anything on that page....but did find it interesting for the time being.  TN isn't just great for climate and fishing.

I never liked the high sales tax in Tennesee, but I guess I wasn't looking at the whole picture.

Move to SoCal and you will know what high tax feel like. We got them all and among the highest in country. Fed, state, property plus special assessment taxes, sell tax, gas tax, cigarettes tax, etc. most that suffering is working class ppl who get screwed front and back, TWICES.

All y'all from KY, TN, PA and other hicksvilles complaining about high taxes are in for a rude awakening if/when you move to a real high tax state/area. I grew up in NYC, so with just a couple of exceptions, everywhere seems cheap to me. There is a reason why the boonies are the boonies. The Taxachussetts guy does have a valid point though.

I do have to say, I’ve lived in 3 other states. I like Texas a lot. I’m not leaving when I retire in 2 years.

 

I love the heat, BTW. We got 4” of snow last week. The whole area shut down. It does get cold, but doesn’t last long. But the heat lasts 3 months.

 

but the bass here like the heat too.

I have vacationed in both spots and love them. I lean towards the Carolinas though as Tennessee is too slow for me. I spent a half hour on a checkout line as the cashier talked with everyone as she was scanning their items. It was all, "Y'all like that brand of shampoo? It did nothing for me." small talking, chatter. It was maddening.

Hahahahahaha. Accurate description. Word of mouth travles faster than the speed of light in TN. If your neighbors cousin has a flat tire you will hear about it before he makes it home
